Possible error Hoge research

Attention descendants of William Hoge/Barbara Hume:
According to old research, the mother of James Hoge (died 1812, Montgomery Co., VA) was Agnes Crawford, the first wife of James Hoge. According to a fellow researcher, the will of Agnes Hoge is recorded in Winchester, VA. In this document, which was written in 1798, she states that she is the widow of James Hoge, and she bequeaths her property to her son Moses Hoge.
According to the biography of Moses Hoge, DD, the mother of Moses Hoge was Nancy Griffits, and researchers have assumed 1) that this information was correct, and 2) that Nancy Griffits was the second wife of James Hoge. The implication was, of course that Agnes was the first wife and the mother of James who died in 1812. The discovery of the will of Agnes Hoge casts doubt on all these assumptions.
If anyone can shed some light on this conundrum, we would all, I'm sure, be very appreciative.
