I wish I could help you with that question, but it remains the same for me too. I know that my James Hogan (wife unknown)died in Bedford County in 1841 and think he was born around 1775.

Bedford County, Va. Deed Book 29, pages 384-385, dated August 27, 1841, the children are listed as Varidiman Basham and his wife Ann; Samuel Jones and his wife, Milly; Jacob Mongold and his wife, Lucy; Elisha Hogan, John Hogan, Peter Hogan,Polly Frazier, Soloman Harris and his wife, Elizabeth; Peter Runcus and his wife, Susan; and James Hogan of the first part and Peter Wright of the second part. The only ones who signed the deed were Vardiman & Ann Basham and Jacob and Lucy Mongold. Therefore, Mr. Wright did not attain title to the property by this deed.

James was living on Beaverdam Creek. James and Peter are listed in a deed conveying the 50 acres to Wright, bounded by the lands of John Dent, William Lawhorn, Edmund Haynes and others, being the same tract of land belonging to James Hogan, deceased. A court order gave a dower in the 50 acres to the "widow" of James Hogan, but her name was not mentioned. Living next door to James Hogan were the Haynes Family. (Their son James, is the one that married Lucy Haynes.)

Bedford County, Virginia Order Book 23, page 144
Dated August 2, 1830. Evidence was addressed to the court to prove that James Hogan, Lucy Reid, Anna Basham and Polly Frazier are the only heirs at law in fee to: John Hogan, Peter Hogan and David Hogan, deceased soldiers of the Virginia Continental Line who died in the service intestate.

We believe that this James Hogan (wife unknown) was son of the Unknown Hogan who was married to (Millicent, Amelia) Millie Unknown. It is leading to the believe that this Unknown Hogan was also named James. Now where did he orginiate is the question.
