Here is a missive between HOFF/HUFF family genealogist and researcher, LARRY HUFF of KY to JOHN SCOTT HOFF:

Hi Lady Di and John,

We may be able to solve this younger Powell H. Hoff Down-stream reality of POWELL HOFF #2) connection as we go a long.
It seems the best guess without proof is that he was the son of Jonas Hoff (son of POWELL #2) who goes missing.
Jonas for sure was old enough to father a child in the 1793 era. Looks like these 3 of the brothers: Jonas Hoff, Jonathan Hoff(died South Carolina) and Amos Hoff born 1775 (the 3XG Grandfather of JOHN SCOTT HOFF), and father to POWELL HOFF (#3) (1801-1870 Dallas Co., IA), were the oldest sons of NC Powell Hoff(#2) and Prudence Sutton.

It is also possible he was one of the baby sons of Prudence Sutton Hoff and Powell Hoff (#2), but something happened to Jonas Hoff, and this Powell H. Hoff born about 1793 shows up.There is a very good possibility that this Powell H. Hoff had a brother named James C. Hoff (speculated as him being a/k/a AMOS HOFF)that traveled with him o Peoria County (Rochester), but not sure yet.

The logic just seems best as a son of Jonas Hoff.

The old man Powell Hoff(#2) and Prudence Sutton stayed in Rockbridge County, Virginia, until 1809, and then followed their son Jonathan Hoff to York County, South Carolina.
So, old Powell(#2) leaves Rockbridge County in 1809, and this young Powell H. Huff(#2A) shows up as a soldier in 1812 from Rockbridge County.

There is a Sarah Huff as head of a household (likely widow) 1810 Rockbridge County census that is connected.

There is a Mary Hooff next to our Amos (spelled Hooff) on the 1820 Fairfax County, Virginia, census.

Likely this Mary Hoff is the same one found on the 1850 census of Peoria Co. (Rochester) Illinois in the household of "James" (AMOS???) Hoff born 1775, father of POWELL HOFF (#3), who we always suspected is Amos Hoff (born 1775, died 1855). Mary may very well be ole Amos niece and daughter of Jonas, but that is only a thought due to the ages and births we know of. /the wife of AMOS HOFF was thought to be a "PRUDENCE POWELL", (from questionable old century-later HOFF family rocords). So, the "MARY" in Peoria Co. was presumably NOT the wife of AMOS.

Your buddy,
Larry HUFF, KY
