Hi "cousin" John,
Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. Here, briefly, is the Hoff/Huff line given by Audra Gall Lambert:
1.Derick Hoff. Died before 1730 in Maiden Head, Hunterdon Co, NJ. He married Sarah (unk) (me: Sarah Jeets/Yates?). Derick's will was made
19 Nov1722, probated 22 Dec 1730, witnessed by Rut and Hannah (me:
Anna?) Johnson and Derick's sons Powell and John were executors.
Names of Derick and Sarah's children taken from will:
i. William
ii. Sarah
iii. Richard
iv. Thomas
v. Powell
vi. John
vii. Joseph
viii. Benjamin
ix. Mary.She married Mr Grady.
2.John Hoff, (Sr.) (Derick). Born c1700 in NJ. He married Eva/Eve Johnson, daughter of Rutger Johnson.
Children of John and Eva Hoff:
i.Elizabeth
ii.John
iii. Cornelius.He married Ann Johnson.
3.John Hoff Jr (John, Sr.- Derick). Born c 1730. Married (unk).
Children of John Hoff Jr and (unk):
i. Anthony 1763-1838. Family listed in 1810 census of Randolph Co.WV
ii. Margaret.Md. John Hoffman.
iii. John III.
iv. William.He married Rebecca Johnson.
4. Margaret Huff (John, John, Derick). Born 14 Feb 1764 in Frederick Co., MD; died 22 Aug 1854 at home of her youngest son Israel Putnam Hoffman in Barbour Co., WV. She married John Hoffman 1760-1823 in MD or Loudoun Co VA.In 1813 they brought their 10 children across the mountains to Randolph Co., a part that later became Barbour Co.
What lends this history some validity for me is the fact that Robert Johnson, the grandson of the Rutger Johnson mentioned above, ended up here in Barbour County, too, as did several other families from the Hunterdon County, NJ, area.
Audra Gall Lambert, who "related" this history in 1988, retired from 50 years of teaching school in 1963. She may have done some personal research in NJ, but she also may have acquired her knowledge of the Hoffs (before Margaret) from someone who did some educated guesswork.
You know how that goes.
Yes, I know that the Pennsylvania "Dutch" were actually mostly "Deutsch"/German. My mother has a Boehm ancestor, a Mennonite, who was one of them. She also has a Wotring (Vautrin), French Huguenot ancestor who lived amongst them. I have immigrant ancestors from all over western Europe and the British Isles, of just about every possible Christian faith. I'm a genuine product of the "melting pot", a mongrel, some would say.
According to a descendant, our Hoffman ancestor, Jacob, came from the German side of the Meuse River (now in France), spent two years in England, then came to NJ via NY. Later he he moved to MD and finally to Loudoun Co., VA.
A curse on our English cousins for burning our capital and destroying so many of our vital records. Now we have to rely on DNA testing to sort things out. Glad to hear you got some results you're comfortable with. I have a swab test on my bucket list.
I've found that although some of my Hoffman ancestors spelled the name "Huffman", it was really originally Hoffman. There is no Huffman line in Germany. Is the same true of your Huff/ Hoffs?
If you're satisfied that you now have your Hoff/Huffs all properly in line, please don't feel that you have go looking for mine. I just saw your email discussions online and thought I might provide a new avenue for you to search,...and benefit from your legwork in the process. If you ever find out who the wife of John Hoff. Jr was, I'd be pleased to know. I'm assuming that Derick's wife was Sarah Jeets/Yates - until I hear or learn otherwise. I'll regard my Hoff ancestry before Margaret's father, John, as unproven.
Good luck to you and your cousins in your quest to find all your Hoffs. There are some in my tiny local phone book.
Thanks, your cousin (somewhere back there), Jim Hoffman
