JOHN HOFF 5/16/11

As always, you make some outstanding and very logical points that are hard to fault or criticize.
While the first name of “John” is relatively common in our common Dutch Hoff/Huff lines, there are not too many “older”/early “John Hoffs/Huffs in the family that are in, or came from the NJ area:
1).There is the JOHN HOFF that is buried in the Pennington Presbyterian Churchyard that was born, I believe in 1738, and some of the details on him and his spouse and family are noted in the burial records of the church that I sent to you.I am unsure who his father was, but it was likely on of the sons of DERRICK PAULUSZEN HOFF of Maidenhead, who moved to nearby Pennington (then referred to as “Hopewell” (Twp.) - making this JOHN HOFF the likely grandson of DERRICK P. HOFF.
2).Then there is the JOHN HOFF that was reportedly born in Raritan in 1720 (although I’ve seen the date 1709 for him, too) which Arnold Hovey attributed to being the father of the Rev. DANIEL HOFF.This may be the same JOHN HOFF that turns up in Pr. William County, VA having some sort of family nexus with DANIEL & MOORE HOFF.His name shows up on several documents that bear the names of these two younger HOFFs.I have seen a death date for him that range from 1787 to 1797.It is my strong suspicion that he is buried in one of the 15 “unmarked” graves (along with Daniel, Laura Titus, etc.) found in the archeological “dig” conducted by the Va. D.O.T. there in the 1990s - next to the farm house of MOORE HOFF located next to the present-day Manassas Regional Airport.I have never seen “paper-proof” regarding the true father of this “JOHN HOFF”, and how he is “wired” up-stream to DERRICK P. HOFF, but there HAS to be at least one generation that separates them, and DERRICK is likely also his grandfather. The father, (whoever he is), was likely another of the sons of DERRICK P. HOFF, and he likely moved from Maidenhead up north to the growing Dutch community in Raritan (in nearby Somerset Co.) before the birth of this JOHN HOFF in ~1720.This same JOHN HOFF may have been the father of MOORE HOFF, who migrated early-on to Northern VA – either together with his father, or his father joined him later.I don’t recall if you ever found direct real property ownership, personal property tax or petition data/records on this JOHN HOFF in the Pr. William Co., VA area.He may have simply resided on the MOORE HOFF farm, and he helped MOORE HOFF with the farm, owning nothing but a horse and he personal effects.I do recall seeing his name on certain documents bearing the names of the other Hoffs (MOORE or DANIEL or AMOS) in this area.
3).There is the somewhat later JOHN F./JONATHAN HOFF (1775-1812) that was born in Pr. William Co., VA, and who died in Fearing Twp, Washington Co., OH in 1812, which Arnold Hovey attributed to being the father of my 2XG Grandfather, POWELL HOFF (III) (1801-1870) & his brother, JOHN HARVEY HOFF (1807 - ?) – which is strongly disputed by cousin Bill Hoff of Omaha, and others who have accepted and believed his position.Bill Hoff may ultimately be proven to be right; however, to date, we have found nothing to “paper-prove” the exact nexus of POWELL (III) to either this JOHN F. HOFF – or AMOS HOFF.However, simply “putting it to a vote” isn’t a very acceptable substitute for documentation and “paper-proof”.This JOHN F. HOFF (born the same year as AMOS HOFF – 1775) -was attributed to being the son of the Rev. DANIEL HOFF.And, you have “paper-proven” that this AMOS HOFF was, without question, the son of POWELL HOFF(II) of York Co., SC, and NOT the Rev. DANIEL HOFF, as postulated by the late Arnold Hovey. Therefore, JOHN F. HOFF & AMOS HOFF were definitely NOT “half brothers” sharing the same common father in the Rev. DANIEL HOFF (but via different mothers – LAURA TITUS& SUSAN SOPHIS MOFFETT, as Mr. Hovey had mis-attributed them to being).
4).There is/are a JOHN/JONATHAN HOFF in the POWELL HOFF(II) line from York Co., SC. I believe he was a son of POWELL HOFF (II) (and a brother/sibling of “my” AMOS HOFF (1775-1855)).You sent me a photo of an old painting of him, as well as a recent photo of one of his present-day descendants, as well as a present-day photo the surviving old, original log cabin in which he resided.
5).There is the Rev. War soldier, JOHN HOFF from far NW New Jersey (Sussex Co. ?), who resided for a time in nearby NE Pennsylvania (I believe in Northumberland Co., PA). I believe that he married a woman with the name of MARTHA MOORE, who also came from the same area in far NW NJ (Sussex Co. - ?).I am unsure who the parents of this guy were and/or exactly how he fits in.You (or Lady Di) unearthed his rfev. War Pension application records.I believe that this guy’s descendants are the ones that ended up in Indiana (in the Richmond area – on the Ohio border).
I am here at work, and don’t have my data handy (and so all of the above is from bad memory in my head, and may not be accurate).Consequently, there may be a few more “JOHN HOFFs”, as well, that I can’t recall off the top of my head.
I would eventually like to link the earliest of these various John Hoffs back to Derrick Pauluszen Hoff (1649-1730), if possible, to help “sort them out”.I believe that you had fairly confident thoughts on the “wiring diagram” and relationship of the York Co., SC HOFFs/HUFFs back to DERRICK P. HOFF.
I agree that there HAS to be some form of very “close” (or immediate) family relationship between DANIEL HOFF, AMOS HOFF and MOORE HOFF (whether brothers of first cousins). All your hypothesis and assumptions seem well-reasoned and right-on to me, however. And, I have to believe that you have done an outstanding job of having “mined” about ALL the original data and available documentation that exists or is presently available. So, all that can be done is to make reasonable inferences or well-reasoned presumptions (which is not speculation) from the limited available data, as you’ve tried to do.And, unless (or until) somebody eventually turns up with a family Bible that definitively documents the various “wiring diagrams” and relationships, this is about the best that can be done at this time.I certainly concur in your thoughts.
Best regards, /S/ CUZ JOHN

Dear John,
I don't have any documents yet but can only speculate from what we have so far .
There were only about 6 of the elder Hoffs from Jersey that migrated to Prince William County Virginia during the War .
The other 3 all came from the Charles Hoff (son of Derrick) and wife Angelina Johnson clan . They were Rev soldiers that fought from Prince William County .
You can find the pension application of the one called James Hoff/Huff that ended up living forever more in Alabama that tells of his migrations.
They really didn't hang tight with the other 3 Hoffs namely Powell, Reverend Daniel and Moore Hoff .
The clan from Charles/Angelina Johnson groupmigrated almost all at the same time together to Georgia and really don't have any records or relationship with Moore, Daniel or older Powell.
On the other hand we have Powell , Moore and Reverend Daniel's group that have many migrations , documents, naming patterns and many relationships between each other's children .
One really good example is when Amos 1775 (son of Powell/Prudence) SELLS his slave Charlie in 1822 to Thomas Hoff son of Moore Hoff and old Moore Hoff signs the deed of transfer .
Reverend Daniel's clan goes to Washington County Ohio and 12 years later old Amos follows suit .
I think it would not be much of stretch to say that Moore, Powell and Reverend Daniel were likely all brothers and the the sons of the Jonathan that died in Prince William County Virginia in 1778.
THIS IS JUST A BEST GUESS UNTIL WE FIND MORE DOCS THOUGH.
Now just who was this Jonathan/ John Hoff a christian man from Jersey ???
I know a naming pattern is very limp !!! but if one cares to venture a thought ...
There is ONLY one Dutch Huff/Hoff lineage ANYWHERE that uses the name of POWELL HOFF .
No other line from any of Derrick Pauluszen Hoff's sons ever used the name of Powell/Paul except this one .
The 2 favored sons of Derrick Pauluszen Hoff's that were left the lions share and were the executors of Derrick's will were the
Powell Hoff that married Rachel Styles AND the John Hoff that married Eve Johnson (daughter of Rut Johnson witness to Derrick's will)
Powell/Styles did have a son named John that disappears in Jersey records AND I'm not sure what happened to the John Hoff and Eve Johnson .
These 2 John/Jonathan's from early Jersey are the front runners so far in my best guess catagory but I think the west Jersey land deeds BETWEEN citizens and not just grants from the state will solve or narrow down the possiblilties of Amos 1775's father Powell Hoff's ancestors.
The y-dna testing will likely help weed out some of the possibilities as well . I have already found a tell/tale in the dna for the line from the male offsprings of Derrick's son Peter that married Caterina Brokaw .
I certainly hope so anyway !!!
Your buddy and true friend ,
Larry
