Dear Roundtable,

I know this is off the beaten trail of proving "who were Powell and John Harvey Hoff's parents?"; but I wanted to share something with you that may or may not turn out to correct. Lady Di got me thinking about this with her New Jersey Will work. I wanted to mention it, so as when we do get back to New Jersey, some might would remember to check this out to see if there is any merit whatsoever to it: It concerns the "up-stream" ancesters of JOHN HOFF (#1)(~1720 Raritan NJ-1778 VA), who was the reported father of: the Rev. DANIEL HOFF, MOORE HOFF & POWELL HOFF)(#2)(~1747 NJ - 1816 York Co., SC).

Of all of Derrick Pauluszen Hoff's 11 children (8 sons), which one is the hardest to track and the least known about after the mid 1700s? What would you think if I said he was also one of the favored sons? What would you ponder on if I said he was proven to have been born/baptisted in the Brooklyn New York Dutch reformed church April 1, 1692 with Parents listed as Dirck Poulessen and Sarah Jeets (Yates)?

This would make this same JOHN/JONATHAN HOFF 86 years old when the only OLD Hoff/Hoof Estate of a Jonathan HOff's was paper-proven to have been settled in Prince William Co., VA of this era (1778).

This individual was married to Eve Johnson who reportedly (I don't have this proven yet), who died in 1757 New Jersey.

Who along with Derrick's son Powell Hoff (#1), that married Rachel Styles, he recieved the lion's share of our Grandfather Derrick Pauluszen Hoff's will?

Who along with son Powell (#1) did Derrick Pauluszen Hoff designate to be the Executor of his Last Will and Testament?

Who was bonded and did the inventory of his father Derrick Pauluszen estate after Derrick died?

Who had a very close relationship with his brother Powell (#1)(son of Pauluszen) and would have likely named a son after this Powell Hoff (#1)?

Folks alot of researchers claim this fellow or that fellow was the original son of Derrick Pauluszen Hoff and they came from this one or that and they are mostly wrong, but you folks do have a very legitimate shot as coming from Derrick's son named John Hoff (that married Eve Johnson).

If the son, John Hoff (#1) was such a "player" around the Hunterdon County, NJ, area and so well known, where is his Will, and where did he eventually go after wife Eve died? As a widower, and with two sons residing in VA, might this explain his move there to join them - until his death in 1778?

If it is proven (and I'm far from doing that, this is just a theory) that the dates and information works out with, then here is a contemporary legal document that bears the names and the original signature of your grandfather, John Hoff (#1) brother POWELL HOFF (#1), sons of Derrick Pauluszen, when he was "bonded" to be the Executor of his father, Derrick's Will. While you sill find what passes for a crude "signature" for "JOHN HOFF, POWELL HOFF uses only a "Mark" for his name, indicating his inability to read or write. A copy of the Will maybe posted and found on <www.MyFamily.com> at the Hoff Family Web Site.

The OLD John Hoff of Jersey (1720-1778) that Daniel Hoff's wife Sophia S. Moffett speaks of in her son, Enoch Hoff,'s Obit. as being "father to Reverand Daniel", could very well be the first John Hoff (#1) who was a son of Derrick.

I would assume this would be interesting to the Roundtable members to check out at a later date?

Thanks to Lady Di: There should have been a Will or Probate Estate settlement for the son called "John Hoff", and there isn't one in New Jersey. There is one for a fellow by this name and the same rough age in Prince William County, Virginia in 1778 though! It is something to think about.

Enjoy,
Cousin Larry Huff
