Dear John,

When I first started, I was 80/20 that John F./Jonathan Hoff was Powell's father.

Then we find that Amos and John F./Jonathan were no closer than first cousins instead of Half brothers.

That made it still 60/40 in favor of John F./Jonathan being Powell's father.
Amos had not been documented at that point (we did later ) as being in Washington county until the 1830 census which was 6 years after Powell married Martha Brewster there.

I would say with the Virginia tax list of 1819 proving Amos had a SON of about the same age as Powell, combined with the fact we have yet to find Powell in Washington County prior to 1824 (maybe we will as we go along),
I would say Amos took a slight lead in the percentage of the Quest for Powell's father .

This is still just sugestive and VERY far from me saying Amos was the father of Powell born 1801 , but thru the document search we have PROVEN that it is certainly a viable possibility.

The tax list of Washington county, indentity proven of Amos son born about the same time as Powell,
and last because it takes 6 weeks to get results, Y-dna test of paper proven lines to Enoch Hoff of Washington County Ohio and Alexander Hoff of York County South Carolina , all would separate your direct line .

James P. Hoff is a person of interest right now for a couple of reasons.

Your buddy,
Larry

Dear Cuz Lar:

Hummm… Well, now you have me perplexed. Given your revelations, perhaps there IS some strong support for ol’ AMOS HOFF being the father of the two “Hoff Boys” (POWELL & JOHN HARVEY). I had come to think that most all the evidence you had unearthed to date seemed to point to JOHN F. /JONATHAN HOFF as being “the guy”. Now, I am back to being “in neutral” and back to the “fork in the road” as to which guy it is, and certainly can accept whichever your documented data points to. I hope you can pursue the option you outlined to see just WHO were the two sons of AMOS HOFF both born in the same first decade as the two “Hoff boys”. Again, in the recent past, you have developed some incredible coincidences (like the “other” paired brothers of an ENOCH & JOHN HOFF (the Rev. War vet from Sussex Co., NJ with a widow in Washington Co., OH), and I suppose that this is either just one more – or… you are perhaps very close to the final answer that we have all wanted and sought after.

Press-on, amigo. Cheers, CUZ JOHN
