Dear Diane:
Good on ya!!! Yeah you!!!
You have provided yet another further link in the DUNCAN-HOFF nexus that favors JOHN F./JONATHAN HOFF as being the father of POWELL HOFF (b: 1801)and younger brother JOHN HARVEY HOFF(b: 1807) (as opposed to AMOS HOFF). I just knew I had seen the name HOWELL/HOWEL L.L. DUNCAN (spelling varies) elsewhere before. After I found him in Fluvanna Co., VA (where "BETSY" DUNCAN HOFF was married to "JOHN HOOF"), you find him in Athens Co., Ohio in 1850, near to where ELIZABETH "BETSY" DUNCAN and her husband JOHN F./JONATHAN F. HOFF(HOOF) lived. He then ends up living with the younger brother of POWELL HOFF, JOHN HARVEY HOFF - well before the mid to late 1850s when both brothers, POWELL & JOHN HOARVEY HOFF and their families move to Dallas Co., IA. That is all FAR too much to be a coincidence. He is then further listed as an heir of ROBERT G. DUNCAN, who seems from the recent records you have unearthered to have joined his children and died there in Marietta, Washington Co., OH. I have seen ROBERT G. DUNCAN listed as the father of ELIZABETH "BETSY" DUNCAN. That would make HOWELL/HOWEL DUNCAN and BETSY" ELIZABETH HOFF brother and sister. Then finding him living with JOHN HARVEY HOFF there in Athens CO. OH, after the death of his mother would seemingly tie "BETSY" and her husband, JOHN F./JONATHAN HOFF/HOOF to the two Hoff boys.

Nice work unearthing this very useful documents. This recent eveidence, though not conclusive, makes it a bit more likely that JONATHAN/JOHN F. HOFF(HOOF) and Betsy DUNCAN were the parents of the two Hoff boys, as maintained by the late Arnold Hovey, as opposed to it being AMOS HOFF & PRUDENCE POWELL, as some otherrs in the family maintain. The evidence seems very strong, based upon the Hoff-Duncan connection via JOHN HARVEY HOFF. I still wonder what ever eventually happened to "BETSY"/ELIZABETH DUNCAN HOFF, and if she (as a widow who perhaps held land at the time of her death which she inherited from JOHN F. HOFF) and whether (or not) she left either a Probated Will (naming her heirs) in Marietta, or alternatively, if she died without a Will/Intestate, there would then presumably then have still had to have been some court document that transferred the title via a probate court action to whatever land she may have received at the time of her death of her husband (in 1812) on to some third-party at the time of her own death (in 1829), assuming that she hadn't earlier sold it or disposed of it while she was still alive.

Anyhow, you seem hot on the trail of some good documentations to help move the controversy as to the parents of POWELL & JOHN HARVEY HOFF on from being just a "coin flip". I am excited by what all you are unearthing. Please keep it up. Sincerely, JOHN S. HOFF
