PRUDENCE HOFF (1828 - 1847)
This PRUDENCE HOFF, born in Washington Co., OH on 3 May 1828, died on 9 July 1847 in Rochester, Millbrook Twp., Peoria Co., IL, is the apparent "name sake" for the other, apparently related PRUDENCE HOFF (~1775 - 1847), who also coincidently passed away the same year. Some family members feel strongly that the older PRUDENCE POWELL HOFF was the mother of POWELL HOFF (1801-1870), making the older PRUDENCE the paternal grandmother of the younger PRUDENCE.The younger PRUDENCE, the third born child of POWELL HOFF and wife MARTHA BREWSTER HOFF, died at age 19 years in the settlement of Rochester, Millbrook Twp., Peoria Co., IL.I learned that she is interred in the Glendale Cemetery on the western edge of present day "Elmore" (Rochester was renamed some 30-40 years ago).I could not determine her exact grave site location in the cemetery, because the older limestone headstone was weathered to the point of being unreadable, or has simply disappeared. The burial site of the older PRUDENCE HOFF who died the same year is presently unknown to me.If AMOS HOFF and PRUDENCE POWELL HOFF lived either with or near POWELL HOFF in Rochester, I would have expected the older PRUDENCE would also have been buried in the same, common location, which was the only cemetery in the Rochester area at the time. However, the cemetery records don't bear that out, and the "older" PRUDENCE HOFF who reportly died the same year is obviously buried elsewhere.Since there were no central records kept in Illinois in 1847, there is no indication as to the exact cause of death of either the younger or older PRUDENCE HOFF.The "younger" PRUDENCE died unmarried and childless. In approximately 1855 the rest of the Hoff Family moved away to Dallas Co., IA leaving the two PRUDENCE HOFFs there in the Peoria Co. area.My quest for more informatin on the older PRUDENCE HOFF continues.Anyone with insight or further knowledge on PRUDENCE HOFF is welcome to contact me directly at either
