The recorded date I have repeatedly and consistently seen for the death of PRUDENCE HOFF is "1847" - NOT 1855, which is the date of death of her husband, AMOS HOFF. The date of 1855 is clearly set out on AMOS HOFF's headstone in the Hoff Prarie Cem., just west of Grimes, Dallas Co., IA. However, in 1847, POWELL HOFF was residing in Rochester, in the far NW corner of Peoria Co, IL (verified from land purchase records and the dates/places of birth of several of their children there). His residency there stems from about 1842, and he would have been there in 1847 when PRUDENCE presumably died. Then, after residing and farming there for some 11 years, POWELL moved to newly purchased land in Dallas Co., IA in ~1854. So, PRUDENDCE most likely died in Illinois on the acknowledged date of 1847, and was likely buried there in Rochester on or near the farm of POWELL HOFF before the move west to Iowa. There is no record of any land purchassed there in the name of AMOS HOFF. So presumably AMOS & PRUDENCE, both elderly by that time, lived with (or adjacent to) POWELL HOFF & wife MARTHA BRUSTER HOFF while in IL. POWELL purchased 4,000 acres there for the sum of $125 in 1842. POWELL's son, JOHN H. HOFF (My 1XG Grandfather) was born in Cesterhill, OH in 1830, but after the move from OH to IL in ~1842, we know that in April 1854 nd married MARY ANN AKINS in DSM, where he presumably had removed to in late 1853 or early 1854. It was obviously a shsort courtship. Presumably his father, POWELL would have been with him in DSM on or before that date. Both purchased land in Dallas Co., IA. The Hoff Prarie Cem. is on the corner of the original "homestead" farmland purchased there by POWELL HOFF. AMOS appears to have been the "first resident" there in 1855, when he was an incredible 80 years old (remarkable for that time). I further assume that AMOS must have resided with POWELL HOFF and was in his later years a member of his household and physically dependent upon him in the final stages of his life. So, I believe that the date of the extended family's migration from IL to IA took place sometime in 1853-54, some 6-7 years after the death of PRUDENCE. Her burial site, presumably in or near Rochester, Peoria Co., IL is yet unknown to me. JOHN SCOTT HOFF, Chicago, IL
