As you see, there is no easy answer to your question. We do know that Bennett, who m. Edmund FREEMAN, was dau/o the John HODSOLL who left a will in 1617. Since the will named a dau/o John HODSOLL's wife, John HODSOLL might have had a previous marriage, too, and Faith may not have been mother of Bennett. The will states that John's father was John. Also, the "brother" John GRATWICKE in the will is believed, but so far not proven, to have been a brother of John HODSOLL's wife.
The will of John HODSOLL was made 1 Aug. 1617, pr. 16 Nov. 1617. The will named wf. Faith; daus. Elizabeth & her h. Wm. SCALES; Anne, wf/o Thos. SHEFFEILD; Bennett, wf/o Edmond FREEMAN; Katherine HODSOL, & Christian HODSOLL; sister Joan WHITEACRE; bro-in-law Richard MOORER; wife's dau. Faith BACON; nephew John HODSOLL; late bro. Robert HODSOLL; brother (in-law?) John GRATWICKE. To son John, "Bakers," in Stanstead, Kent, "sometyme lands of my father John HODSOLL, decd., which descended after death of my brother Henry HODSOLL." [JEWITT's Reliquary 19:163-4; M. inscription, Ash Church; Reg. Ref. p. 780; probate reg. Weldon, fol. 101. --I haven't checked these references.]
East Grinstad, Sussex, 6 Oct. 1624, inquiry named land including some in Stanstead. That shows John HODSOLL's son John; daus. Katharine, aged 34+, wf/o Warnerd NORWOOD; Bennett, 31 +, wf/o Edmund FREEMAN; Christian, 27+, wf/o Wm. FREEMAN; & decd. daus. Eliz. SCALES & Ann SHEFFIELD.
Bennett [HODSOLL] FREEMAN died at Gravel-cum-Chesfield and was buried 12 Apr. 1630, Pulborough, Sussex, England. Edmund FREEMAN m2. 10 Aug. 1652, Shipley, England, Elizabeth RAYMER.
In 1633, Edmund FREEMAN brought suit in Sussex Chancery on behalf of his children against Wm. HODSOLL, et al, relatives of his wf. Bennett, decd.
