This may be of little help, but I was researching a Meshach "Mace" Hodge. I remember my grandmother mentioning him, as it was her grandfather. Although our dates of birth are way off (mine was born January 12, 1847 in Laurel County, Kentucky), the name is way too specific to pass off as a coincidence. I suspect it must have been a family nickname from a generation or two earlier.

My Meshach "Mace" also died in Missouri, but in Maries County, near the town of Vichy - April 14, 1928. His parents were Jeremiah Hodge and Frances Freeman (or so the notes from my aunt say).

Maybe your guy was an uncle. Perhaps if you find a brother or sister of jeremiah Hodge (who would have likely been born in the 1810s or 1820s, you might find a link.
