I've since found that James L. Hodges was born ca. 1810-20 and died 12 May 1849 in Union Co. He married first Rebecca Moore in 1829 and then Nancy A. Rorex in 1834. Children John, Caroline, Nancy C.(married Wm. McConnell & Giles Collins), Catherine and two unknown males.
I don't know where he was born. I'm wondering if he is the son of James Hodges and his first wife unknown, second wife Rachel Ann. James died in Limestone Co., Ala. and a few of his children moved to Union and Jackson Co., Ill.
