Hello Peggy,
I am VERY interested the the John Deboe Hodge family. I am hoping you can help me.
I have a copy of the orginal will from NC Archives:
3 Nov 1792LW&T JOHN (H) HODGE, to dearly and well beloved WIFE
AGNESS, the whole benifit and use of my house and her mantainance of
my plantation during life: also her bed and furniture, also one bay
mare and her last colt, also two milk cows at her own choice, six
sheep and half the hogs with the increase: One negro woman named
Sall, all to be hers during her life and at her death to be given to
or amongest those of her heirs, she pleases. But should my wife
marry then, in that case I will negro woman Sall and other articles
above, (except her bed and saddle) to my son ROBERT, he paying to my
two grandsons WM. & JOSEPH sons JOHN each ten pds, when they come of
age. Divide my personal and real estate to my sons GEORGE and SAMUEL.
I give to my son JOSEPH the still. To my son ROBERT the plantation
where I now live, the waggon and the remaining part of the hogs,
cattle, sheep and hoggs, with all the farming tools and my land in
the Western country.Wife and son ROBERTexors.. signedJohn (H) Hodge.
Witt: WM. HODGE and Jno. Herman
provedAug of 1811
The wording about the two young grandsons is copied EXACTLY as written in the original will.I guess that it means his two under age grandsons William and Joseph are sons of John? But, it does not say his son John is deceased!
What, if anything can you tell me about this son John Hodge Jr?I cannot find the son John in the Orange County records. Was John still alive in 1792 and gone off to somewhere else?
My ancestor is William Francis Hodge who stated he born 30 Jan 1791 in Orange Co, NC to Elizabeth Justice and a "Mr". Hodge. William Francis stated (in his War 1812 pension) that his father, Mr. Hodge abandoned his mother when he was young child.But...Elizabeth Justice married Aaron Combs the following August of 1791, while my WilliamFrancis Hodge was still a baby. And, she married Aaron Combs under her maiden name of Justice.
I am not sure there ever was a Hodge/Justice marriage. The facts given above are proved by the 1812 pension and the will of John Justice, the father of Elizabeth Justice.
I would really appreciate anything you might be able to tell me about the children (especially John!) of John Deboe Hodge. I do not know what happened to any of John Deboe Hodge's children, nor where his land was in the "Western Country".
Thank you very much for any help,
Marj
