Theresa,
An excellent free facility for checking details of people in Cornwall from the 1871 Census is at:
http://209.140.72.162/cgi-bin/genealogy/crcensus?-1+0+Englishhttp://209.140.72.162/cgi-bin/genealogy/crcensus?-1+0+English
It's part of the Kindred Konnections Genealogy and Family History web-site. To use the search facility is fairly self-explanatory once you've logged onto that site. If you have any problems then by all means come back to me. Warning though - I've already inserted your Sarah Jane Hodge with suggested date of birth and no one shows up. Maybe her actual date of birth was different, or her name was actually different or else her family had moved away from Cornwall by the time the 1871 Census (in April) took place.
I spotted your query because I too have Hodge relatives who were living in Cornwall in the 19th century and further back but my relatives do not - at this stage - tie in with any of the names you quoted. One of my relatives was also called Sarah Jane Hodge but we differ in time by one or two generations and the parents are different, etc.. Anyway, good luck with your searches.
By the way at the Families Records Centre (FRC) in London (UK) there is an alphabetical index list for the entire population of England and Wales for 1881. You would need to contact the FRC for advice on recommended people to approach to carry out a search of that index, if that would be of any use to you. Their web-site address is:
http://www.pro.gov.uk/about/frc/default.htmhttp://www.pro.gov.uk/about/frc/default.htm
The FRC holds all the Registers of Births, Deaths and Marriages since 1837 for England and Wales and also all the microfilm copies of all the Census returns for England and Wales for 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881 and 1891. (1901 will be available - on line - at the end of year 2001).
Hope this helps.
