Dear Janet,
My wife is descended from the Hockeys of Montacute, and I've just completed a consolidation exercise on all our previous research on the Hockeys in the area, most of which was carried out around 1990. The tree incorporates the John Hockey (b. 1803), son of William and Catherine, who everyone seems to have concuded was the one who married Mary Lovell, fathered Samuel, Enos and another, and was then deported to Australia and remarried. I received a letter from Max Laidley in 1996 which affirmed this connection, although he stated that most of his information came from Temlett Hockey of South Africa and Rosemary Pardoe-Thomas of Newport. My wife and I exchanged notes with Rosemary (including copies of Temlett's research) in 1990 before carrying out more research, and I have recently re-established contact.
On inspecting the tree I now have computerised I notice that there is an alternative connection point, and I don't know whether anyone involved has any corroborating evidence to support the generally assumed connection to William and Catherine's son. Another John Hockey was born in 1806 in Montacute to Caleb and Betty Hockey, and I had previously assigned him to an 1825 marriage to Mary Tatchell (with associated children) on the basis of the Australian connection. There is clearly room for some confusion here, and I'd be interested to know whether later family evidence sheds any light.
The connection to Thomas and Mary (also discussed by some other correspondents) is also interesting. Thomas (who married Mary) was the son (bap 1784) of Thomas Hockey and Joan (Bool), and so a cousin of William and Catherine Hockey but with no obvious closer links to John.
I'd be very interested in an update on what you've discovered of the Australian Hockey tree descended from John and his family, and of any progress in your research since all the e-mails here on genealogy.com. I'm aiming to get in touch with as many descendants as possible who have an active interest in the family history so that we can cross-check and consolidate our research and potentially coordinate better on future work. Please let me know if this would be of interest. I'd be grateful for any contact details you can send me for people with some expertise on the family.
All the best,
Ian Hall
