Dear relations! My part of the great family tree seem to originate around the Yealm river,Newton Ferrers and Noss Mayo, in Southern England, around the early 1800s. They were boatbuilders, and in 1830 William and John Hockaday built a fleet of crabbing and pilchard boats from which the family made their living. We still have one of the original boats in the family! From 1877-1927 the Hockaday family made up most of the Yealm lifeboat crew. I am interested in several of the postings on this site, and have replied to Hannah Houton, as her family tree matches mine. I would very much like to know any information about Lewis Hockaday, who left the Yealm area in the early 1900s, apparently to go to Cornwall and also information on James Hockaday, nicknamed Foggy!,who moved away in the late 1800s to another area of Devon. Look forward to hearing from you, Claire Richards, nee Hockaday Notify Administrator about this message?
