I have noticed that Hobson and Hebson, said to be distinct names, co-existed in number in the 16th-18th centuries, in a small area of Westmorland which includes Morland, Newby, Sleagill, Strickland etc.
Does anyone know about the history of the development of these names? Some standard sources claim they came from different Norman roots while some more recent research suggests they may be from Viking roots, which would open the possibility that the names were not always distinct but shared a common origin and were perhaps sometimes interchangeable...?
Thanks
Peter
