Francis Hobbes s. of Edmund, nphw Thomas
I am seeking information on Francis Hobbes, son of Edmund Hobbes and nephew of Thomas Hobbes (who was b. 5 April 1588 -- philosopher, author of 'Leviathan') in Malmesbury, Wiltshire.Edmund was born approximately two years before his brother (ca. 1585), presumably in Malmesbury Wiltshire/Gloucestershire (his son Francis' birth date is presumably ca. 1605).Edmund and Thomas (they also had a sister, named ???) were the childen of Thomas Hobbes, and ??? Middleton of Brokenborough.Thomas, father of Edmund and Thomas, and grandfather of Francis, had at least one brother named Francis, who died without issue.
I would also be interested in any information which indicated that Thomas and Francis had any other siblings, or the identity of their parents.Presumably this family is interconnected with the many Hobbes branches found in Wiltshire and Gloucestershire during the 16th and 17th cs.
Grandfather Thomas was vicar of Charlton and Westport (next to Malmesbury).
Francis, son of Edmund had two sisters, who I currently believe, without anything approaching conclusive evidence, were Margaret, christened 27 June 1606, St. John the Baptist, Devizes, Wiltshire, just south of Malmesbury, and Edith Hobs, christened 30 December 1612 at the same. This attribution makes Edmund Hobbes wife (or at least one of his wives) Agnes Smith (m. 2 May 1603) and, given the marriage date, she is likely the mother of Francis as well.John Aubrey's 17th c. biography of Thomas Hobbes, from which much of this info is gathered, indicated (and he seems to have been personally acquainted w. Edmund) that Edmund had only one son, Francis, and the two daughters.
Any information, correction, or addition would be most appreciated.
