I would like to propose as a THEORY (requiring more research to prove or disprove)that Matthew Hickson (also Hixon or Hixson), who married the widow Phoebe Everett (also Everitt) in Hunterdon County, New Jersey in 1728, and who named a son Titus Hickson, was actually marrying a certain Phoebe Titus.

This Phoebe Titus was born circa 1706 and would have been married to a man surnamed Everett/Everitt in about 1725. Mr. Everett/Everitt then died, leaving her a young widow, and she married a second time, in 1728, to Matthew Hickson (also Hixon or Hixson) in Hunterdon. Matthew and Phoebe named a son Titus and the family moved, about 1762, to Loudoun County, Virginia (as did numerous others from Hunterdon).

Matthew Hickson was the son of John Hickson and thus the grandson of William and Mary (Patterson) Hickson, early Quakers in the area of Crosswick Creek, Burlington County, NJ, who also moved into Hunterdon.

Timothy Titus of Hunterdon County, New Jersey, reportedly the son of Content Titus (b. 1643 in Weymouth, Massachusetts, but moved to Newtown, Long Island, New York ca. 1670), was reportedly born about 1676 and moved, before 1722, to Hunterdon, then left a will dated 1757 naming his children, including a daughter Phoebe.

My THEORY is that Phoebe Titus, daughter of Timothy, married an Everett, was widowed, and then married Matthew Hickson and named a son Titus Hickson.

Does anyone have any information on the maiden name of the widow Phoebe Everett/Everitt who married Matthew Hickson? Or does anyone have an alternative explanation for the choice of the name Titus for a son of this couple? Or does anyone have any information on Phoebe Titus, daughter of Timothy? I welcome information that would either prove or disprove this THEORY. Please contact me directly at
