Lucy Hitt,

Thank you for your Hitt postings. In your Snedecor’s posting we have the following: HITT, David, planter and miller Pleasant Ridge, Hopewell- 1818 [[My notes: He is my ggg-grandfather. 1818 was the year he came to Greene Co., AL. He was the founder of Pleasant Ridge. This is the first I ever heard that he was a miller. He was also a general merchandise store owner and a part time preacher. I think he was a Methodist. I know his wife was a Methodist.]]
HITT, Solomon J., planter and Baptist minister, Clinton, 29, 22, 1e [[My notes: He is my gg-grandfather, the son of the above David. Do you know what the numbers 29,22, and 1e mean? He was a Baptist Minister but not until he was about forty. Until that time I believe he was a Methodist. He was also a schoolteacher. ]]
HITT, John M. , planter and Methodist preacher, Mt. Hebron, Gainesville , 31, 22, 1w [[My notes: he was David Hitt’s son and Solomon J. Hitt’s brother. Note they were both ministers but one remained a Methodist and the other became a Baptist. It should be recognized that David Hitt’s family was Baptist and that he became a Methodist because his wife was a dedicated “old time Methodist” as it says in her obituary. Both brothers were very successful.]]
HITT, Benj. planter, Pleasant Ridge , Hopewell [[My notes: Benjamin Hitt was David Hitt’s brother. Solomon J. named his son, my g-grandfather, David Benjamin Hitt.]]

The VT Hitt posting and probably the MI Hitt posting is for a different Hitt line. Early Hitt families came to New England from Devon, England while my ancestor and the ancestor of almost all Hitt descendants in the South came from Germany via the 1714 immigrant Peter Hitt. There have been a few later Hitt immigrants, mostly from Germany, but none before 1800 that I am aware of.

I see that Hitt is your married name. Is your husband’s family from the north or the south? Are you interested in the descendants of Peter Hitt the 1714 immigrant? I have a lot of data. E-mail me at hudsonpw@ev1.net

Philip Hudson
