being married to a HITT, I have done some searching, on the line. These do not fit so far into my line, however thought that someone could use this information. at least I hope so.

The German Community
What is known as the "German Community" in Woodland was founded in 1846, by Michael Rowlader, who came to the township in September of that year, made a settlement upon section 14.
Therre was no other settlement by Germans untill 1832, when Jacob Felta made his home upon section 23, Christian Berkley upon Section 14, and Conrad Hanes upon section 15. Shortly after that the Germans came in rapidly. Among those coming earliest were the families of Michael Reiser and his son Jacob, J. F. Smith, Mr. Neidhammer, Jacob Funk, A. Baetinger, John Cramer,Gottfried Risler, J.G. Swartz, GEORGE HITT, M.Schwitzer, J.Buling, The Schaibleys, Bayhas, Schulers, Wagners, Bitzas, Eckhardts, Rhineharts, Broadbecks, Fenders, Entzes, and Metzgers.

A German Methodist Episcopal class was formed about 1855, in the Galloway school-house, and included the families of Jacob Felta, GEORGE HITT, Conrad Hanes, and Gottfried Risler, Risler being chosen class-leader. Rev. Jacob Krebil, the first pastor. (there is more on this .. but I did not enter here).

Hamilton Lodge, No. 113, F. and A. M., located at Moscow village, was organized in August, 1858, with 8 members. Its first Master was Henry Griswold. The present
membership (winter of 1878-79) is about 85, and its officers as follows, Oviz.: Worshipful Master, George C. Wyllis; Senior Warden, Cyrenus M. Parker; Junior Warden, OLIVER HITT;

G. HITT was born in Delaware county, N. Y., at Coal Center,
Sept. 14, 1832. His father, Ephraim F. Hitt, a farmer and a pioneer, was a soldier of the war of 1812, and his grandfather was a Revolutionary soldier, and for a time served as an Orderly for General Washington. Hitt was afterward appointed carrier of Government mail. Ephraim F. Hitt. in 1835, moved from Delaware county to Jackson county, and purchased of George Stranahan 50
acres of land on sec. 17, to which has been added 220 acres. Mr. Hitt received his education in the common schools of Delaware county, and was married Oct. 6, 1858, to Miss E. M. Aulls, daughter of Wm. H. Aulls, a farmer of Bridgewater tp., Washtenaw county. They have 3 children-2 sons, Elmer G. and Frank R., and a daughter, Mary E. Mr. Hitt's farm comprises 270 acres in Jackson county. Of most loyal blood were his ancestors and he is in every essential a Union man, and is industrious and frugal.

biographical sketch
Gordon HITT-
owner and occupant of 140 of land on section 17, Columbia Township. Dennis Hitt, the grandfather of our subject, was born in New England,in NY, his son Ephraim (father to Gordon) was born in NY. Ephraim m. Miss Ellen Radcliff, a native of NY, Mr. and Mrs. Ephraim Hitt began their married life in Delaware County, where 2 sons and 7 daughters were born to them. One daughter died there, and the remainder of the family came to Michigan in the spring of 1835. Dennis Hitt, lived to be 77 yrs old, and Ellen the mother to be almost four-score.
Gordon Hitt, the youngest of Dennis and Ellens children b.September 14, 1832 In Washtenaw Co. he married Miss Eliza M. Aulls, a native of Bridgewater b. July 5, 1843. Her parents, Wm. H. and Lois (Hoyt) Aulls. , of Steuben and Saratoga Counties, N. Y., Wm H and Lois Aulls m. in Steuben County. Mr. Aulls died at the home of his son, Columbus, December 9, 1871, 69 years old. His widow Lois subsequently came to this county, dying at the home of her daughter Mrs. Hitt, March 8, 1878, when nearly 74 years old.
Gordon and Ellen HITT had 5 children,
1-Bruce HITT deceased at time of this writing.
2-Elmer HITT married Miss Idell A. McReady. she is deceased
3-Mary HITT married Wm. Robertson Jr. lives in this township.
4-Frank R.HITT married Anna Spencer of Spring Arbor Township
5-Bessie HITT still lives at home.
