Family 'history' from a grandson says: John was born about 1800 in Yorkshire, tho 1830 & 1840 census give his age as 40-50, indicating he could have been born as early as 1790. The third son of a wealthy man who wanted him to be a shipbuilding engineer, he rebelled and took ship for America, landed in New Orleans and worked river boats on the Missippi. About 1825, he married Cynthia Laughlin and settled in Union Co., Ill. where he operated a ferry. They had five children: Edwin, Martha Jane, Monroe, Sarah A., and Henry L. About 1846, he decided to "go to Texas", loaded the family in a wagon and sent them south, planning to finish up business and follow by riverboat, meeting them in Arkansas. The family waited at the assigned spot, but John never arrived. (His marriage, children, ferry operation and the family's move to Arkansas are documented.)
Looking for clues as to John Hirst's origins. Does anyone have someone 'lost in America' who might be this man?
