The 225th Reenactment of the Siege of Savannah is taking place October 7-10. There is a full schedule of events on all days including reenactments of the battle and large encampments of Colonial and British soldiers at a site just outside of town off of I-95. The Hiott brothers Arthur, Joel, and Joseph fought there as members of the 5th South Carolina Light Infantry Regiment under Col. Pinckney. Their Captain, James Hogan was wounded there but the Hiotts survived to fight many more days for American Independence. There is a special memorial/commemoration service planned for Saturday, Oct. 9th at which I am working on arrangements to have a wreath laid in honor of the Hiott Patriots. Bring the kids to some of the events and pass on our heritage to the younger generation. Info as follows: (also see websites listed later)
BATTLE OF SAVANNAH COMMEMORATION CEREMONY Battlefield Park Site (Between Savannah History Museum & Roundhouse Railroad Museum on MLK, Jr. Blvd.) You are invited to join reenactors in historic costume for a solemn ceremony on the field where the Battle of Savannah took place. We will fire volleys to represent the significant moments in the battle, and march silently up the hill towards the site of the Spring Hill Redoubt to recreate the steps of the Allied attackers advancing on the British-held city. Parking will be available in the Savannah History Museum & Visitors center parking lot adjacent to the site. Please gather in the parking lot around 7:00 a.m. We will all proceed to the ceremony together. (a short walk) There are reenactments at the I-95 site on Saturday afternoon and Sunday as shown on the following websites under the October calendars. http://www.chsgeorgia.org http://www.savannah225th.org The ceremonies are being put on by the 225th Anniversary Committee and the Coastal Heritage Society. While in Savannah, the kids may also enjoy Fort Jackson, just a few miles south of downtown on President Street. It is on the Savannah River and was built for the War of 1812 and was used extensively in the War for Southern Independence. The larger events will be the Sat and Sun reenactments at the I-95 site. The website has a map. It is just a short jump over from SC and very close for any Savannahians.
