Hinnants in Williamsburg and Marion counties SC from NC
I have Ruffin P. Hinnant in Suttons, Williamsburg Co., SC here:he comes from Johnston Co., NC.
I have been looking, as a favor, for awomanwho wanted to find her family tree for her aged grandmother Mary Albertha McCutchen born about 1914 (she married Stuxton Taft Green) in Suttons, SC and Mary Albertha McCutchen a Mulatto was brought up by a white Ruth Hinnant b. abt 1892, daughter of Ruffin P. Hinnant, after her father Adam McCutchen murdered her mother Mary Lou Parsons and then killed himself in 1919.

Ruffin Pike Hinnant came as a merchant to Suttons, Williamsburg Co., SC.before 1880- he is age 26 in the census there in 1880.
This is the story as I know it from Laura Salter-Green-
According to several witnesses and descendants, Ruth Hinnant´s brother Otto C. Hinnant was the lover of two Suttons, SC Mulatto women who lived on Hinnant land in Suttons, SC. One was Idella Green. Another lover was Mary (Jordan) Green who had originnaly been married to William Green, but he died around 1911. She became a widow and the children from 1912 on were the children of Otto C. Hinnant. This caused eventually his white wife Addie Huggins to divource him. Her name was Adeline Huggins. She had a brother Albert and a brother George, whose letter is still in the hands of Otto C. Hinnant`s mulatto descendants.

Ruth Hinnant must have married a Chandler-here she is living with her brother Bryant. Ruth has one child here.I did not find where she was living before this time. She may have been in NC: with the mulatto child Mary Albertha mcCutchen born abt 1912. (Mary`s parents possible/supposed parents Adam McCutchen and Mary Lou Parsons- died within 2 days of each other June 1919.)

One of the mulatto Green boys knocked one of the white Huggins brothers down the steps during a party. Huggins- do not know for sure which one- had been drinking too much and insulted Taft´s cousin. The mulatto boy (Taft Green, Otto´s first son by Mary Jordan Green) was put on a bus the next morning by his white father Otto Hinnant to avoid trouble in the Suttons southern community. The bus took him to Philadelphia where he started his life anew.
Apparently on family land, everyone knew that Otto had a large family by two of the Negroes, but this was not talked about outside the family. Otto`s sister Ruth made secret visits with her Mulatto nieces throughout her life.
Ruffin P. Hinnant´s daughter Ruth- raised an orphaned black child (Mary Albertha McCutchen b. abt 1914) and secretly kept contact all her life to all her mixed race nieces from her brother Otto C. Hinnant.
