Hello Sandra:

I am also descended from Horace, through his son Orville Hinman. I, like you, have been researching this line for a long time - since 1984 in my case. I am fairly certain that Aaron is the father of Timothy, but am looking for land records or some other info that may prove it. I have recently written to the National Archives to search for a pension and service record. So far, they were not able to locate the pension (I guess this makes sense if a bounty land grant was awarded some 30 years later), but they did locate a compiled service record and they are in the process of sending this to me. I will be more than happy to copy this for you and send it. I probably won't get any genealogical info from it, but it may tell me how and where Aaron died. I am also writing to the Natl Archives to get his complete bounty land warrant file (maybe the ages and names of his wife and kids will be mentioned). Lastly, there is an index to remarried widows applying for pensions, and a record of bounty lands that were surrendered that I plan on checking as well. I will be happy to let you know how these searches turn out.

I feel fairly confident that Aaron is the father of Timothy, b. 1796. A couple of reasons, in which you are probably aware:
1. There are only 2 Hinmans that I know of that were living in Paris, Oneida County, NY - Aaron (in 1800), and Timothy (in 1820). In 1800, Aaron had 2 male children living with him under the age of 10. I am presently trying to analyze the census data for both of these years to see if the neighbors are the same.
2. The bounty land warrant mentioning Timothy as being the son of Aaron appears to have been notarized in Clinton, Oneida County, NY. As you already know, Timothy and Moranda Warner were married in Clinton in 1819.

Another researcher is not as confident as I am in calling Aaron the father of Timothy, b. 1796. He has good cause to be cautious: The bounty land warrant is dated 1842. Timothy and his family by then were living in the next county over (Oswego County) at Sandy Creek. Sandy Creek is approximately 80 miles from Clinton, so why wasn't the warrant notarized at another courthouse that was closer to Sandy Creek? It certainly would be nice to find some land records that tie in our Timothy with the Timothy mentioned in the bounty land warrant. I recently checked with the Oneida County Register of Deeds to see if there were any lands sold by Aaron Hinman or Timothy Hinman. They came up with nothing. But I haven't given up on this just yet. There appear to be other sources to check with the National Archives (a couple of them I listed earlier). Keep those digits crossed!

One other interesting tidbit: The HFA database lists another Timothy Hinman as marrying Lola Pond (you probably know this already). Well, this isn't our Timothy (Lola and family moved to Illinois by 1820 and she died there in 1822, and their son Timothy was b. abt 1818, well after Aaron had died), but the Pond family (Timothy, Barnabus and their families) lived in Oneida and Madison counties. Barnabas Pond lived in Paris for a time. Timothy Hinman and Lola Pond had a number of children, three of whom are named Timothy, Aaron, and Warren. These three names are also associated with our Hinman line (Timothy and Warren were the sons of Aaron), so I'm wondering if there is a connection. Probably not, however, because the HFA database (and the work by Samuel Pond, published 1875) has this Pond family and Timothy Hinman as hailing from Waterbury, CT. We know from Aaron Hinman's army enlistment record that he was born in Woodbury, Litchfield County, CT. So Timothy and his father Aaron are probably descended from one of the 8 million Hinman's living in Woodbury.

Thanks again for your reply. It's always exciting to hear from distant cousins.
