Cora Hinkley Kain Odom Creswell (Ohio, 1867-1923)
I am seeking descendants of Artemon (Arteman) Hinckley (Hinckley), who was born in August 1844 and married Emma Parsons.Arteman and Emma had children Cora, Willis, Edward, Libbie, Gersham, Charles, and Alta.
My particular interest is in Artemon Hinckley’s eldest daughter Cora A. Hinckley, born in Ohio on 19 February 1867.
Cora Hinkley is recorded in the 1870 census of Wellington, Lorain County, Ohio with her mother Emma Hinkley and her grandfather, Ebenezer Parsons. And Cora is recorded in the 1880 census of Pittsfield, Lorain County, Ohio with her mother and father.
When Cora was no more than nineteen, she married a man whose last name was Kain. This marriage resulted in two children:
1.Sanford Mark Kain, b. 13 Jan 1887 in Stanwood, Mecosta County, Michigan.
2.Esta Emma Adaline Kain, b. abt. 1892 in Big Rapids, Mecosta County, Michigan.
Around 1901, Cora Hinkley married Morgan Calvin Thomas Jefferson Odom, who had been born in South Carolina around 1870.They lived in Mississippi, possibly in the eastern part of the state, near Wilmer, Alabama. In 1902, Cora had a son:
3.Edward Morgan Odom, born 7 April 1902 in Mississippi.
By 1910, Cora and Mr. Odom and their son Edward were living in Escambia County, Florida.According to a web posting by Shirley Odom Lansdale, Cora was at this time a schoolteacher at the Barimo or Barrimo (sp?) plantation (or school district).
In 1913, according to Shirley Odom Lansdale, the family moved to Pittsfield, Lorain County, Ohio (which is where Cora had grown up).
Sometime before the end of 1918, Cora married William G. Creswell (b. 19 October 1857 in Illinois, the son of Henry Creswell and Mary Hannah).Cora and William lived in Cleveland, on East 55th Street.
It is possible that Cora had another son with William G. Creswell.
Cora Hinkley Kain Odom Creswell died in Cleveland on 16 March 1923.
After Cora’s death, her widower husband, William G. Creswell moved to Mobile, Alabama, where Cora’s son Sanford Kain lived with his wife Laura Mae Lewis. After about a year in Alabama, William G. Creswell moved “back north.”
William G. Creswell subsequently spent some time living in Oberlin, Ohio with his step-daughter, Emma Kain (Sanford’s sister) and Emma’s husband, Fred Roscoe Young.(They are recorded together in the census of the 1930.)
On 19 November 1931, William G. Creswell was struck and killed by a car near Oberlin, Lorain County, Ohio.
At this time, Cora still had a number of living relatives, and I would dearly love to communicate with any of their descendants.Cora’s sister Alta Hinkley married Henry Kelley; and Alta (“Aunt Altie”) lived until 10 May 1965, when she died in Oberlin, Ohio.
Any connections? Please let me hear from you!
Thanks,
Chris Hanlin
