My husband was a descendant of Rev. Anthony Jacob Henckel/Henkel through his son Justus. I looked in vain for years trying to find my own Hinkel/Hinkle through my father's line. I knew it wasn't through Rev. Anthony Jacob Henckel's line from the research I had done. My great grandmother was Margaret Erdilla Hinkel, daughter of William BENJAMIN Hinkel/Hinkle from Luzerne Co, PA. It wasn't until John Helmut Merz posted on this Hinkle board that I looked into what he had to say, although I had collected a lot of research before then in trying to find my earliest ancestors since I was looking for them while doing research for my husband's Hinkle's and another line of Hinkle's. The German's kept excellent records of their soldiers in the American Revolution as England was paying for them for the soldiers to fight in it. These soldiers didn't necessarily want to join. Sometimes they were impressed in order to meet the demand for enough soldiers to fulfill England's wishes. John Helmut Merz even lived in the village of Ruedigheim near Hanau where my Philipp Hinckel came from. A Hessian soldier probably won't get anyone in the D.A.R. but they might take satisfaction that their Hinkle may have helped in the surrender of the Hessian Hinckel's at Saratoga and battles elsewhere. The Hessian prisoners were ordered back to wherever they came from in the Hessian provinces at the end of the Revolutionary War but quite a large number didn't go back. Some remained in America and some went to Canada.
