It could have been both. Researchers: can check AMREV-HESSIANS-L@rootsweb.com list (subscribe) mail list archives that has information by Merz and others. Elsewhere on this forum John Merz notes that although 1783 is the year mentioned, 1782 was the year offered for prisoners to "work out".) The dates of the German Military records were reversed for the two Philipp Hinckel's. Philipp of Massenheim b 9 Aug 17 1751. Clyde Willard is a descendent of the other Philipp and has photos of his Philipp's tombstone. John Helmut Merz has postings on: <http://freepages.military.rootsweb.com/~bonsteinandgilpin/a/amhessians10.htm> (remove the <> to connect) This is a site for anyone looking for Germans they have been unable to find that could have been HESSIAN soldiers in the Revolutionary War that came to America. You can check the lists Merz had completed of his own personal research from German records and other records, just before he died that were in the GUIDE he published and some additions (not Philipp Hinckel of Ruedigheim that was a very recent personal research document)to it as well, all on-line. It was a work in progress, unfinished before he died. Merz mailed my information of Philipp Hinckel of Ruedigheim and a GUIDE I had ordered not long before he died. Merz was a highly respected researcher, born in Hesse, Germany and moved to Canada becoming interested in the American Revolutionary War as German Hessians had fought in it for Brittain, and some later moved to Canada as well as those remaining in the United States.
