I believe John was born Jan 12, 1837 in Osterwald,Bentheim, Germany and died in Grand Rapids, Mi on Nov. 25, 1896.Janna was born Apr 3, 1837 in Georgsdorf, Germany. I have 1907 for year of death, but nothing to back it up.John's parents were Jan Harm Hinken and Lutte Walcott-Deters married Sept 23, 1831.Janna's parents were Berend Schippers and Fenne Meyer.
John(Jan) Hinken and Janna had 9 children.
Zwenne-June 13, 1861 married Harm Tien
Jan-christened Sept 27, 1863-may have died since younger brother named Jan also
Berend(Ben)-Oct 22, 1865 married Grace Handlogten
Jan Harm-Sept 25, 1868
Fenne-christened Feb 19, 1870 married VanderJagd
Lukas-christened Nov 26, 1872 married Elizabeth Zylstra
Janna-1877
Gertrud married Tys Vanoyen
Grace married Hoelsema
I believe they immigrated in 1882 according to "The County of Bentheim and Her Emigrants To North America" by Swenna Harger and Loren Lemmen.Swenna is related to us through the Schippers. I've also seen 1878 as the date they immigrated. The whole family except for Jan Harm immigrated according to a history of the Poppen family. But I haven't found them on a ship yet.
Any info that you can add would be greatly appreciated.
My great-grandfather is Berend Hinken.Later known as Ben.
Thanks,
Diane
