Hindman Confusion!
I don't know where to begin, but will try to explain this dilemma as best I can.
I am pretty certain to where I have gotten up with James Allen "Salvador" Hindman, born in 1855 in Iowa and died in 1936 in Iowa. After this, it all becomes one huge mess. On Ancestry.com, I came across James Robert Hindman (born 1826 in either Indiana or Pennsylvania), who is supposed to be Salvador's father. This is where the confusion starts. First, I'm trying to find out for sure where James Robert Hindman was born and where, and if this is, in fact, the father of Salvador. All of the census records I found lead me to believe that he is, because everything, so far, matches up. I did find something that a James Robert Hindman, his brother William and another man, who travelled with the mormon train from Pennsylvania. James was said to have been granted 160 of land in NW Missouri.
Next confusing fact (or not). James Robert Hindman is said to have a father, William Hindman (no middle name or initial known). On family trees in Ancestry.com, various people have two William Hindmans listed as this individual. One born in Pennsylvania in 1806 and married to a Mary Polly Long, born in 1805. They supposedly married in 1832. The other is a William Hindman, born in 1798 in Kentucky. Now, James Robert Hindman is said to be married to Margaret Adeline Stephenson in 1849 in Holt County, Missouri. Many people have listed between the two William Hindmans, a son, John Maynard Hindman. It is also said on many of these family trees that John Maynard and James Robert are brothers. I find this to be very highly unlikely, because John Maynard was born in Oct of 1825 in Clay County, Missouri. James Robert was born in either Indiana or Pennsylvania in March of 1826. The reasons should be obvious as to why I think these to people are not brothers. Another related catch, which I DO believe to be true is that John Maynard was married to Nancy Jane Stephenson and James Robert was married to Margaret Adeline Stephenson. The two Stephenson girls are said to be sisters, as both were born in Parke County, Indiana in 1828 and 1830.
Confused yet?
Now...The William Hindman that I found to be from Pennsylvania is pretty much ruled out as the father of James Robert Hindman, because the dates of birth for the James Hindmans I have found in both don't even closely match. The William Hindman, I am conviced is the father of John Maynard Hindman, born in Oct, 1825 in Missouri, but NOT the father of James Robert Hindman, born in March, 1826 in either Indiana or Pennsylvania.
Also, two women, supposedly the wives of the William Hindmans pop up as Phulvia French (no other info can be found) and a Mary Polly Long (1805-1887, but no other information can be found). It is my belief that the William Hindman from Pennsylvania and Mary Long were married, because they are buried in the same cemetery (Worthington Presbyterian Cemetery in Worthington, PA) with nearly identical headstones (they are separate, but except for a small detail, are the same).
As you can see, what I have found is a complete blur. Basically what I am looking for is who is actually the father of James Allen "Salvador" Hindman and where and when they were born and who they are married to. Then, who is that man's father? I can't believe that people can NOT pay attention to details, or maybe they have more information than I do and that I don't know about. It's just thoroughly confusing.
Anyone that can and is willing to help, I would greatly appreciate any input.
Thanks,
Michael Kersey
