HINDLEY / HENDLEY from Manchester, England: in Nebraska (& Lincoln, Miss.?)
My gt-gt-gt-gt-aunt Catherine MARKS (b.c. 1823 in Ireland) married Robert HINDLEY in Manchester, England (co. Lancaster)in 1843. Robert and Catherine seem to have emigrated to Nebraska around 1873 with two of their daughters, Hannah HINDLEY (b. 1851) and Jane HINDLEY (b. 1868), and Hannah's daughter Annie HINDLEY (b 1872).
I have recently been told by an American relative that Hannah, also herself known as Annie, married John GIBBS, an English ex-sailor, in the 1870s; they were living in Lincoln, Nebraska, at that time, and had several children. Little Annie, Hannah's daughter, died in Lincoln, Nebraska, as an infant, in 1877. John and Hannah/ Annie GIBBS later parted (they were divorced in 1880). Hannah remarried ( William BOYKER ). Hannah's birth name HINDLEY was sometimes spelled HENDLEY.
In 1880 Robert and Catherine HINDLEY (Federal Census) were living on their own in Beatrice, Gage, Nebraska. In 1881 (Census of England & Wales) Robert had returned to England (Manchester), to stay with his son Robert, though Catherine had stayed for Hannah's remarriage in Lincoln.
In 1880 Annie HENDLEY (divorced, aged 30) and Jane HENDLEY (single, 12) were on the staff of a Hotel in Kearney, Buffalo, Nebraska. They may be Hannah and Annie HINDLEY.
I am trying to find out what happened to Jane HINDLEY/ HENDLEY and her mother Catherine HINDLEY. I have not found that Catherine or Jane ever returned to England.
The IGI refers to a marriage of a Jane HENDLEY and a George BROWN in Lincoln, Mississippi, on 25 August, 1897. Could this be Jane HINDLEY?
Does anyone recognise an of the above HINDLEYs or HENDLEYs from these descriptions?
