Hi Ian, Oh joy! After a great deal of digging, I managed to find Ernest. He was not Ernest Roberts after all - just plain old Ernest. His parents are not identified but his date and connections are correct, so he is the one. He in fact, married Elisabeth O'Brien and lived mostly in Quebec but died in Ontario (consistent with working on the Quebec/Ontario railway line.) His children married into French families, which are very interesting to discover. His son Clifford Ernest (my father) was born in Terrebonne, Quebec and spoke fluent French. Missing factors are Ernest's parents, his Yorkshire place of birth and the family of Elisabeth O'Brien (of Dublin.)
