My husband's family is descended from Mary Ann HIMEBROOK and John S. SIMONS of Greene County. John is the son of Samuel Simons, who built the 1836 Greene County Courthouse and was an early County Commissioner. John was mortally wounded in the last hard battle at the Spotsylvania Courthouse in Virginia during the Civil War. Mary Ann was his second wife and together they had 10 children, 2 of which died in infancy. She is the daughter of William and Louisa Neal Himebrook, who originated from Prussia, possibly Hanover. Mary Ann and some of her siblings were born there, but the rest in Indiana. They resided in the areas in and around Bloomfield, the county seat of Greene County. At the time of the 1860 Census, they lived in Stockton Township/Linton Post Office. These are the ones I extracted from that census:

Page 515, Dwell 616/Fam 617
Charles E. Himebrook, age 26, born Germany
Mary, age 21, born Indiana
William A., age 2/12 or 4/12, born Indiana

Frederick H. Himebrook, age 32, Born Prussia Germany
Mary J., age 41, born Germany
Daniel N. Harrah, age 21, born Kentucky (appeared to be Mary’s child of previous marriage)
Rebecca Himebrook, age 12, born Indiana
Joseph Himebrook, age 10, born Indiana
Stephen Himebrook, age 8, born Indiana
Mary Himebrook, age 4, born Indiana (She married John Carpenter in Greene County)
Frederick M. Himebrook, age 1, born Indiana (his name was on next page 516)

Page 516, Dwell 620/Fam 631
William Himebrook, age 60, born Prussia Germany
Louisa (nee Neal), age 50, born Prussia Germany
William, age 21, born Prussia Germany
Milton, age 10, born Indiana
Sarah, age 8, born Indiana

William and Louisa Neal Himebrook’s children were:
Frederick H., Mary Ann (Mrs. John S. Simons), Charles E., William C., Lewis, Louisa, John Milton, Sarah J. and T. W.

I have noticed that while many of the given names of this family were often used over for new generations, the families were foreward thinking enough to change either the order or to make the first and middle name combination different from an older member. In this I have been very lucky in trying to figure out who belongs where. I have noticed also, that many times the name is extracted as HiNebrook, I assume due to the difference in handwriting styles through the years. I would like to know which is correct and also if anyone knows the original “Old World” spelling in German. I have come up with many possible variations, but my German is limited.

In Grant Township, Village of Switz City, Greene County, Indiana, there is a Himebrook Cemetery and Mary Ann’s brothers John M. and William C. Himebrook are buried as Civil War Veterans. There is also WWII Veteran burial for Merrill Himebrook in the Walnut Grove Cemetery. I also suspect that Mary Anne may have been married at one time to a man named Goodwin, possibly after the death of John Simons, in 1864 and the time of her death in 1879.

In the RootsWeb database they are 20 Cemetery listings for Himebrooks in Clinton County, Iowa.
