Hi Tom, I'm helping Elaine and here is her message below. Jan "Thank you very much Tom - Minor Hillyard did move to Brasher, St. Lawrence County, NY. I have found him there on censuses near my Mansfield family who moved there from VT. The Mansfields first appeared on the 1830 census in Brasher. I have copies of the 1830, 1840 and 1850 censuses listing Abijah Mansfield and 1860 for Norfolk listing him and his son James Abijah Mansfield and his wife and infant son. Between 1850 and 1860 they were on the IA state census for 1856 in Allamakee Co. They returned to IA where the son and his family remained and Abijah and his wife died before the 1870 census. Abijah was married to Harriet Tuttle in Rutland VT in 1828 and she died - probably after the 1830 census from the count on it. He then married Luenna Hillyard (her name is spelled several ways on different censuses, etc.) We think she might be a daughter of Minor Hillyard but have no records to prove this. Abijah and Luenna Mansfield are buried in Cedar Falls, Black Hawk Co. IA. What seems like a puzzle to us is why did they travel and seemingly settle in IA and then return to NY and then return to IA. Their first child was a daughter born in 1834 in Brasher and her name was Harriet Luenna Mansfield (seemingly named for both wives). She married in Jan 1856 and remained in IA with her husband Henry Corning who was also born in NY (Columbia Co.). James Abijah was married in August 1856. Both couples were married in Prairie du Chien, WI. Why did they cross the Mississippi River to marry???? Seems like the more information we find the more mysteries there are to solve. <grin>.
