1. There seems to be a bit of confusion about two different Rhoda HILYARDs. Your previous note suggests that the parents of the Rhoda HILYARD who (on 23 Oct 1787 in Mendon, MA) m. Royal MARSH were Simeon HILYARD & Phoebe PURLINGTON.
You also note that Rhoda HILYARD was born in Hampton Falls, NH, on 23 August 1768. Is there a family bible that confirms these relationships and Rhoda's birth date?
2. However, on p. 1262 of Gilbert Warren CHAPIN's "The Chapin Book," published in Hartford CT in 1924, the parents of the Rhoda HILYARD (who married Royal MARSH) are listed as Stephen HILYARD and Joanna DARLING. I don't know what G.W. Chapin's track record is nor how accurate his book is reputed to be. Do you suppose G.W. Chapin got it wrong?
3. Now, if one goes into Ancestry.Com and roots around a bit, there is indeed a Simeon HILLIARD Sr. (b. ca 4 Sep 1740 in Chichester, Merrimack County, MA) who (before 1766 and probably in Chichester, MA) m. Phoebe PURLINGTON. Among their 9 children are Rhoda Hilliard (b. 1768 in NH, Simeon HILLIARD Jr., and Phoebe HILLIARD. This may be a good fit.
4. However, if one pokes about still further at ANCESTRY.COM and explores both spellings, HILYARD and HILLIARD, there is indeed a Stephen HILYARD who (on 13 April 1769, in Mendon MA) m. Joanna DARLING. Their daughter, Rhoda HILYARD, reportedly was born on 15 January 1770 and later died on 17 June 1834 in Woodstock, VT.
5. Do you have a sense as to which of these two competingh Rhoda HILLIARD/HILYARDs may be the onew who married our Royal MARSH. I think that the best way to prove it might be to have access to Family Bible Records or to Public Records.
I do realize that Ancestry.Com and even G.W. Chapin may have gotten it wrong. Any thoughts?
6. Just to make things even more sporting, there appear to be divergent views as to the parents of Joanna DARLING, or perhaps there were two Joanna DARLINGs.
7. In "The Chapin Book," on p. 586, it is noted that Joanna DARLING (d. 1841 in Waterbury, CT) was he daughter of Peter and Amy Darling, and that in January 1811 she married Charles WEBSTER. It further is noted that Joanna DARLING previously was married to Jonathan WILKINSON. And on Ancestry.Com, there is indeed posted a Joanna DARLING who is the daughter of Peter and Amy DARLING.
8. However, on Ancestry.Com, there is also a Joanna DARLING who is the daughter of Thomas DARLING and Rachel WHITE. Thomas DARLING in turn is the son of Benjamin DARLING and Mehitable WHITE.
9. Any thoughts as to sort out this tangle using primary rather than secondary sources? Will welcome your thoughts.
