Hi John,
1. I note with interest, the name is John Hilton, not Hylton.
2. I have never seen any evidence of Welsh origins for John Hilton, the nearest evidences to Wales at that time were the Hiltons/Hultons of Parke near Bolton in Lancashire, and I am not convinced this branch of the family had early settlements in Virginia
3. I have a copy of book on the Hiltons of Scott County, Virginia and have noted the early Hiltons arriving in Virginia and Maryland
4. I have studied in detail the Washingtons in Virginia arriving from 1656 onwards, descendents of the Washingtons of Warton in Lancashire (George Washington was married at St Peter's Church in New Kent County) but after the broken backed church had been destroyed
5. I note that John Hilton is mentioned in my research at; http://www.ancestryuk.com/HiltonsinVirginia.htmhttp://www.ancestryuk.com/HiltonsinVirginia.htm
6. The Hiltons of Westmoreland who were arrested, due to a witch hunt of Catholic recusants by Quakers (dis-illusioned roundheads) after the restoration of the monarchy provided the motivation for either John Hilton of Brough or John Hilton of Warcop to go to America - they would have had to be apprenticed to get landholdings.
7. I believe his mother was Mary Hilton of Hylton Castle, daughter of Baron Hilton of Hylton Castle. He was son and heir aged 15 on 22nd March 1664 according to the visitation of Lancashire 1664 under Hilton of Hilton Beacon and certified by his father Robert Hilton esquire. This would have provided the knowledge to head for St Peters in New Kent County which seems to have been a meeting point for Westmoreland and North Lancashire families.
8. The only will we have over here that ties in is the will of John Baxter 1634 of St Mary's Parish in Maryland made 20th January 1634/5. Agnes Baxter, widow of Baxter, merchant of Newcastle was the 4th wife of Sir Thomas Hilton of Hylton Castle.
Unless someone over there can come up with any evidence that supports the Wales theory, or provide evidence of which Hilton in Lancashire it was, there appears to me to be enough supporting evidence to presume it was John Hilton of Warcop. It will probably never be proved
Hilton Family pedigrees are contained in the 4th edition of the book, the Hiltons of Hylton Castle.
The next Hilton Family reunion over here is from 6th-11th August 2010 which ties in the end of the Tall Ships Race - we will be visiting;
Hilton Castle at Hylton, City of Sunderland
St Peter's Church, Hilton Village, Hilton Parish, Yorkshire
(near Kiplin Hall, home of the Calvert family, founders of Maryland)
St Katherine's Monastery (now Hilton Hall), Hilton Manor, Hilton Village near Raby Castle in County Durham.
Hilton Hall in Hilton Village (was Hilton Beacon) near Appleby in Westmoreland.
Helton Village (was Helton Fleckett) in Cumbria
Middleton Hall, birthplace of Hugh Hilton who arrived on the ship Edwine in 1619, and was recoreded at Carles Citee, Virginia in 1623.
Hope you can make it!
Eric
