Julie-
Are you sure of the location for this Hills family?
The reason for asking is that Plymouth Colony, Mass had few Hills there.A Samuel Hills, born 1671 in Saybrook, Conn, was of Duxbury, Mass prior to 1694 where he married Phebe Leonard, daughter of Philip Leonard of the iron monger Leonards. This Samuel is believed to be the son of John Hills and grandson of William Hills, a proprietor of Hartford, Conn.Samuel served an apprenticeship in Duxbury as a cordwainer. There are extensive land records for him, a will, many church records. He is the only documented Hills in Plymouth Colony. He married, as his second wife, Abigail Hinckley, a granddaughter of Gov Thomas Hinkley and a greatgranddaughter of the Rev Lathrop.
In 1725/1726 Samuel relocated to Lebanon, Conn.He sold out of Plymouth where he owned upwards of 400 acres of land in various towns. He had rights as a proprietor to various town lands in Duxbury. He also owned farms in Pembroke, Marshfield and surrounding areas. His 1725/6 deeds with the Gillettes in Lebanon, Conn state he had been formerly of Duxbury.
Two of Samuel's sons remained or returned in/to Marshfield/Pembroke/Hanover after Sameul's relocation to Lebanon.
A son Richard, a housewright, stayed in Marshfield, marrying on 20 March 1728-9 a Jemima Ramsdell b 28 July 1710 Pembroke. In the book Descendents of Samuel Hills 1957 Winifred Lovering Holman, Richard and Jemima are listed with the following children:
1. Richard b 1729 Hanover, Mass
2 Thomas b abt 1733
3 Leonard b July 1739
4 Lettice b 2 June 1745
5 Samuel b 26 June 1749
6 Joseph b 12 April 1752
Mrs Holman notes there may have been other children. These six show in the vital records for PembrokeShe notes that Hanover was formerly part of Scituate, Mass.Richard was still of Hanover at the time of his father's deathMrs Holman also notes this line dropped the "S" from Hills.Little is known of this group.
Samuel's oldest son Philip relocated with his father to Lebanon but appearantly returned to Marshfield prior to his father's death.Various genealogies differ on his wife's name and on the names and number of his children. The Hills Family In America lists, as does Barbour's Vital Records, a wife Hannah Cutten and 3 children born between 1728 and 1732- none named Josiah.Philip had a 57 acre farm in Duxbury.Mrs Holman believes he had other children but cites to records of First and Second church of Lebanon, Conn for the proof. She claims his wife may have been "Cutter" or "Cutting" of Watertown, Mass.
Mrs Holman's notes that she is confused about his children some of whom may be children of another brother Ebenezer who clearly went to Lebanon with his father and remained there. Both Ebenezer and Philip had wives' with similar given names Hannah/Ann.Of Philip's children the only records which survive are those of a daughter Dorothy who married a ggrandson of Governor John Webster and had 7 children by Jonathan Webster.
Little is known of brother Ebenezer other than the names of his children and that all were born in Lebanon, Conn. and none were named Josiah.
None of the written Hills genealogies have any record of your Josiah Hills or of a Lucy Keen.I would love to know more about who they are and any records you have of them.I would be particular interested if the dates or names show any connection to Richard Hills. If is more likely Josiah, if connected, was born to a son or grandson of Richard than to either Philip or Ebenezer or to their children.Your guestimates on birth date cover a lot of ground.
Samuel Hills of Duxbury b May 1671 Saybrook d abt 1753 Lebanon is my 9xggrandfather.Your folks maybe a missing link.
We do know that Samuel was a cousin to the Cole families of Plymouth and was also related to various other Plymouth families by way of his mother, the relic Bushnell. There are various interconnections to the Bushnells, Lathrops, Websters, Coles and others between Hartford, Plymouth and Lebanon. Samuel had business partnerships with the Thomas family of Duxbury which continued to Lebanon. These names should appear among descendents as spouses.
Get back to me with your thoughts.
