John Hillman was born in Congresbury, a small village of Somerset County near Bristol, England, on “the last of March” 1793. He married Rebecca Thomas of Wicks St. Lawrence, England, a woman of Welsh descent. The Hillman name has long been known in Somerset and nearby counties of southwestern England. Thus, the record of Yatton church, near Congresbury, shows twenty terms of office of church wardens of this name, starting in the year 1446. In the early centuries the name was variously spelled Hullman, Hyllman, and Hylman, but always since 1700 with the present spelling of Hillman. According to the Media Research Bureau the early Hillmans were, in good part, of the landed gentry of England and some of them had a Coat of Arms. For example, Sir Robert Hillman, who died in 1692, is buried in the church chancel in Romsbury, England, and the following inscription appears on his tomb: The good knight is dust, His sword is rust, His soul is with the saints, We trust. First known ancestor of John Hillman was his father, another Robert Hillman, born in Banwell, Near Congresbury, in 1750 and died there in 1833. More to come, I have about 70 pages(too much for this format) and will let you know when and where they are posted. Notify Administrator about this message?
