I am not related but I checked on the Rootsweb Social Security death index and found two Gerald D. Hillis.

GERALD D HILLIS born 29 Jul 1915 and died 08 Apr 1999 Last Residence: Steubenville, Jefferson, OH, SS# issued in California

Also found a
GERALD HILLIS born 20 Oct 1935 and died Oct 1985 Last SS Benefit was in Tujunga, Los Angeles, CA, SS# Issued in California

You might try finding an obituary or the estate record or funeral home where he died. It might list relatives names.
