Michael Hillegass is my 'great...uncle'.I am descended from his brother Robert(or Thomas) I can't remember.Anyway, Michael was a wealthy sugar merchant in Phila. He personnally helped fund the Revolutionary War, as did Robert Morris.Unfortunately, I can find little in history that really gives Michael credit as being the first treasurer of the US under the Articles of Confederation.I think it has something to do with Michael not being a Quaker.I think the Quakers wrote most of the history back then, since Robert Morris was a Quaker and he is mentioned more prominently than Michael.Anyway, if you or anyone else has more info on Michael, I'd like to know.Thanks.
