I would seriously doubt you find a Silas there. By the time James was born the family was in La. The grandfather could have gone there while the father was very young. La was a big territory for a while which went as far north as Mo if I read the one article I found on the web right. The fact that a Hilliard was in SC long enough to be born does not mean that he stayed there. It was extremely fluid at that time and people were passing thru to Ga and other points west. I found a couple of Jesse Hilliards on the census back in SC and a John I think, but nothing else. I really could not even figure out how to research the La Territory bit. Some records went to St Louis and some to another town in So. Louisiana. I find the repetition of names between this family and the family that spawned Theodore Roosevelt very interesting. Mom's family always said they were related to him but I never heard them say that his Silas was their direct ancestor. I think the two families link a generation or two farther back and that they would be cousins. Louisiana and Georgia share a border so I sort of looked once at the part of Louisiana that runs along the border but could not find anything there either.
