Looking for information on John Hiles of Welland / Humberstone / Wainfleet Ontario born supposedly in 1875
He is listed in the 1901 and 1911 census. It is believed that either they came from England, or with many others of the time from the US as UEL.
In 1911 he is listed with his spouse Jane (aka Mary Jane aka Jennie) and children Gertrude (my maternal grandmother) and Clarence
More interestingly, I'm looking for information on Mary Jane ... I have no maiden name ... It is understood that she was born in 1977 in England.
Mary Jane has a colourful history. Sometime after being married probably about 1893, she torched her father in law's barn and was convicted of Arson! She was incarcerated in Kingston Penitentiary (before it became Kingston Women's Penitentiary) and gave birth there to daughter Gertrude who was born in April 1894.
She was next "seen officially" in the 1901 census in Kingston as a Servant with her daughter Gertrude working as a servant to a plumber in Kingston and not some 300 miles back home in Humberstone!
Children born while women were incarcerated were either returned to their families, or placed in an orphange or private foster care. The suspicion is that Gertrude was placed with the family of Robert Wilson of Kingston (originally from Ireland and only appears in the 1901 census) on the condition that Mary Jane (known then as Jennie) served the Wilsons (Robert, his elderly mother and his sister) to pay off the debt of raising Gertrude.
Mary Jane, having torched her inlaws barn was probably NOT likely to want to send Gertrude home to be raised by John and his parents!
Obviously, by late 1901, Mary Jane and Gertrude returned to Humberstone, and Gertrude had a brother Clarence born in August.
So the questions there are ... who is Mary Jane and where did she come from in England!
