George Travis Byrd, a long-time resident of Enterprise, passed away Friday evening, March 16, 2007, in the Southeast Alabama Medical Center. He was 88.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday from the Patterson-Sorrells Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Tim Toomey and the Rev. Glenn Butler officiating and his grand-nephew, Dr. Mike McQueen, delivering the eulogy. Burial will follow in the Meadowlawn Cemetery with Patterson-Sorrells Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home beginning at 10 a.m. and continuing until service time. The family asked that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Inez Turner Byrd memorial scholarship fund at St. Luke United Methodist Church or to the church building fund, 201 Heath St, Enterprise, Ala., 36330.

Mr. Byrd was born March 21, 1918, in the Post Oak Community of Dale County to the late Edward Revestus and Erie Hildreth Byrd. He graduated from Dale County High School in 1939 and was among the first soldiers to serve at then Camp Rucker during the Second World War. A retired banker and insurance agent, Mr. Byrd worked at the Enterprise Banking Company for 46 years prior to his retirement as vice-president in 1986. A member of the First United Methodist Church of Enterprise until 1959, he transferred his membership to St. Luke United Methodist Church when he and his family moved to their residence at 402 Gibson St. where he lived until his death.

He was preceded in death by his first wife of 39 years, Inez Turner Byrd; four sisters, Maude Byrd Windham, Foy Byrd Montgomery, Virginia Byrd Sansbury and Pennie Byrd McKnight; three brothers, Curtis Isaac Byrd, Mixon Carroll Byrd and Dr. Ben Ralph Byrd.

Survivors include his wife of 20 years, Elizabeth Russ Byrd; his four children, Edward Travis Byrd and Samuel Turner Byrd, Margaret Byrd Wingate and Marilyn Ann Byrd; their families, including, David Dangle, John Hotard and three grandchildren, Travis, Christie and Brittany Byrd; one sister, Susie Byrd Maddox; and one brother, Emmett Edward Byrd; three sisters-in-law, Sue Byrd, Mary Byrd and Doris Byrd; over 30 nieces and nephews, and numerous grand- and great-grand-nieces and -nephews.

Pallbearers will include grand-nephews Lee Thompson, Chuck Walker and Stewart Turner; great-grand-nephews, Nicholas and Alexander McQueen; and Mr. Byrd's special friend, Chris Baker.
