In Reply to: Elizabeth Worrel m. Vaughn Hilburn by Mel
Mel,
hiya! I finally was able to gather some information up that I have.
From a letter by Mrs Alice Faye Hilburn of Marietta, Pa:
Vaughn Hilburn Sr. had:

Henry b. 1772 (married Nancy Sikes in Brunswick Co. NC; went to Dale CO. Ala [1830 - 1840] and later to Coffee/Covington Co.'s}

Luke b 1790 (stayed in NC)
James (married Mary Ward in 1813)
Benjamin (went to Alabama)
Frederick (went to MS)
Vaughn Jr.
and some daughters who are not named
Now, another list I got states ( I belive someone up loaded it to LDS):
Vaughn Hilburn & Elizabeth Worrel had:
John in 1767
Vaughn Jr. in 1769
Benjamin in 1774
Henry Francis in 1776
James in 1780
Luke in 1790
Now, the lists are similar but not exactly the same. I cannot verify this info; most I believe came from Old Dobbs Co. NC records. At any rate, it would be interesting if Elizabeth Worrels family is indeed from Isle of Wight Co VA because I believe the first Vaughn/Vaughan Hilburn (son of John) is also from Isle of Wight Co. VA.
Anyway, I hope this info at least gives someone a clue!
good hunting, Jeannie

Re: What country did the Hilburns come from???
I agree with your statement on the origins of the Hilburn name(and all the variations) and also on the origin of the first Vaughan Hilburn in recorded Virginia history. But remember that is a great leap of time from Germany to Virginia of 1730s (which is where records first record Vaughan Hilburn buying land and on the will of one John Vaughan of Isle of Wight County - which we suspect was related by marriage but don't have any prove). Though the Hilburns of England (largely the Somerset area) have no prove of any Hilburns going to Scotland (at least not when I was emailing them a few years ago), we have a strong family oral history of our migration from Scotland, to Ireland, to the colonies. Having read thru the Quaker records extensively, there is no actually prove of that connection, though it would not surprise me. Also, records do show the Hilburn surname in Ireland and Quakers in Ireland too. It would be nice to have some prove by consistent records of some sort.
Thank you for replying!
Jeannie

We have a book that a cousin put together with the help of the whole Hilburn family. It has Hilborn or Hilburn on the front of it and it is copyrighted by Odell Deville. Our Hilburns are spelled this way but the English spelled it Hilborn

Hilburns in Ireland andVaughan in VA
Posted by: jeannie       Date: March 03, 2001 at 12:57:34
What we have heard so far:
Robert Hillborn born Dublin Ireland 1692. We have Hilburns outside of Dublin in a place called "Talurah". Also a Vaughan Hilburn mentioned in a will in Isle of Wight Co. VA in 1736 and land records for him too. We have heard of a Joseph Hilburn born in 1732 of John Hilburn and Nancy Stuckley, Joseph who had a son Frederick in 1768.
Anyone have any more on Ireland and early VA?

In Reply to: Info on Wm Hilburn (VA/SC) c1730-c1805 by Robert Edwards

I visited the web page for the Hilburn genealogy and did not find any reference to a Vaughan Hilburn. Vaughan Hilburn b. 4-6-1806 in VA/NC (depending upon the census source cited) d. 5-30-1891 in Laurens Co., GA m. Eliza Ann Mclemore in Laurens Co. b. 2-16-1812 d. 11-20-1893 in Laurens Co. GA. Had several children including my gg grandfather Andrew Jackson Hilburn, (7th & 21st GA Cav). According Andrew Jackson Hilburn, his son Octavius Inman Hilburn, and his daughter Lois Hilburn (my grandmother) the father Vaughan Hilburn of GA was John Hilburn. Three Hilburn brothers (two whose whereabouts after they immigrated from Ulster are unknown) came to America. One of the brothers settled in VA, in Isle of Wight. A later descendant, John Hilburn emmigrated to NC, then SC (where he was drafted into service in the Amer. Rev. in Newberry District. While John and his family were passing through GA to settle land granted him for his service in the American Revolution (4th Regt., Light Dragoons, Continental Troops), Vaughan remained and became a stagecoach driver between Milledgeville and Augusta. After Vaughan's family went on to Mississippi, John Hilburn, Sr. and his on John Hilburn, Jr. were granted additional land patents certificates in Copiah and Washington Counties in MS. Vaughan rode on horseback to visit his mother in MS before she died. John, Sr. later moved to Paulding County GA where he lived with Samuel and Rebecca Hilburn (his son?) according to the 1850 GA census page 055 and 060. Also have wills for Vaughan Hilburn in Isle of Wight Co., VA in 1736 and one in Hinds Co., MS in abt. 1834. Looking for help to solve this puzzle.
Thanks for any responses.

Vaughn Hilburn 1730 Va. land grant
Posted by: Robert Edwards       Date: March 18, 1999 at 06:19:22
Hello Hilburn researchers!
Recently the Virginia Archives made copies of their land grants available via the Internet. For an example, you can access the Vaughn "Helburn" 1730 grant of 100a in Isle of Wight Co. via the URL:
http://198.17.62.51/cgi-bin/drawer/disk19/CC150/0407/H0763?1
This URL gives you access to an index card for the entry. The screen you are presented with has a button to push for access to the document itself. The document is a compressed "TIF" image, and is a little hard to read (after all, it is 250 years old!). But with a little effort you should be able to make out the text.

In the mid 1980's I was in Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina and spoke to a B. Graham Hilburn. He told me there were three brothers who came from England in 1745 and settled in the Carolinas and farther south into Georgia and Alabama. Their names were Luke, James, and Von or Vaughn Hilburn. I was wondering if these are the names of the three brothers you were talking about.

Descendants of William Hilburn

Several Hilburn family history enthusiasts, including Barbara Brittain Ryals, Michael Barr, Hilda Haney, Otta Sue Hill, and Robert Edwards, have put together the following genealogy of one of their ancestors, William Hilburn, Sr, who was born about 1730, possibly in Pennsylvania, and died in Newberry County, South Carolina sometime between 1800 and 1810.

The Hilburn family researchers ask users of this material to consider it "work in progress." Hence, if any republication is represented as "final results," readers will be angry and frustrated when they find that new information has invalidated what they thought was the "last word."

For this reason, users of the research presented here are asked not to republish the information in any of the "non-updatable" media, such as Broderbund's World Family Tree project, which doesn't permit revising previously distributed data. Also, users of the data are asked to respect the preliminary nature of the results by including the phrase "Preliminary Results" in any use of the genealogy.

A simple descendant listing for four generations of the William Hilburn family follows. For a full NGS Quarterly (Descendant Ordered) Genealogy Report in RTF (Rich Text Format) for these four generations (includes many notes and references), click here.

In some notes received from Scott Smith of Enterprize, Alabama, it is theorized that the father of this Vaughn Hilburn was Henry Hilburn and Nancy Sykes. It appears this Henry Hilburn came to Alabama sometime before the 1830 U.S. Census, Alabama. He was married to Nancy Sykes in Brunswick County, North Carolina in 1808. In that area were, at least, two Hilburn families, possibly branches of the same family. Hilburns are in North Carolina as early as the 1750's.
