A bit of mistletoe for your Highsmith tree.. While researching my Ruddell ancestors in Texas we found a document in the General Land Office naming Rachel Ruddell, formerly Rachel Highsmith, now widow of Stephen Ruddell, residing in Adams Co., IL, as one claiming heirship to Richard Highsmith and J.D Morris. The same document names William Highsmith of Lincoln Co., MO, brother to J.D Morris and Richard Highsmith. Their objective was to “settle a land claim” in 1865. We have seen the marriage of Rachel Highsmith Woods to Stephen Ruddell, 06 Apr 1834, as recorded in Lincoln Co., MO. She and Stephen had at least four daughters – Susannah, Abigail, Amanda and Mary. Stephen is a well-researched son of Isaac Ruddell, founder of Ruddells Fort in Kentucky. Stephen and his younger brother Abraham were captured by the Indians in 1780, raised with Tecumseh, released in about 1794. Stephen became a farmer and a Baptist preacher. Rachel Ruddell was still living in Adams Co., Mo on the 1870 census. She was 72, born in Georgia. Incidentally, the documents concerning Jonathon D. Morris also confirm something I believe was already known – Morris and Samuel Highsmith were half brothers. A 1858 Bastrop Co., TX document signed by R. H. Grimes as heir and administrator of the estate of Richard Highsmith is probably one of your ancestors?? Notify Administrator about this message?
