Hi Randy,
You don't need to tell me about the importance of using original documents.I always do, if I have them available.
What I don't understand is why, in your letter of 17 June, above, you, who knew better, would list that erroneous date of 1704 not once, but twice, instead of sending these originals, with the correct dates.Thank you very much for sending them.
Now you probably know as well as I do, that these patents would be dictated to the clerk, who would write down what he heard. If someone said Hicks and the the clerk heard Higgs, that is what he would write down. However, in the Rent Rolls, they knew who paid the rent, so they were more likely to write down the correct name, which in this case was Hicks. The important thing is that most of John Hicks holdings were in St. Clements Hundred. Here is a quote from his Will abstract:
HICKS, JOHN, St. Mary's Co. 30 May 1749; 20 Aug 1753
To eldest son, William Hicks, plantation called "St, Johns," 250 A. which I occupy and adjoining to "Saint Barbarys" whereon (I) live. My desire is that, as my said son William is now in England with his uncle, if his uncle provides well for him there, my desire is that he give unto his brother George Hicks the said plantation called "St. Johns" above devised to him but this is left to himself.
To son George Hicks, plantation whereon I dwell called 'Saint Barbarys," 100 A.
Now there were were several St John's and St. Barbara's in St. Mary's Co., but I only found two that were next to each other in the Rent Roll (TLC p.45):
St. Clemenrs Hundred:
St Barbara's 500 acs. surv. 26 Jul 1663 for Emma Turner,
above the Head of Chaptico (Bay)
St John's Landing 300 acs surv. 10 Apr 1665 for Luke Gardiner. At the head of St Clement's Bay.
The survey for Wednesday's Project states that it starts at "a bounded tree on the east side of the main fresh of Chaptico Baynear the east by north line of a tract ofland called "Hopworth" belonging to Thomas Notley Goldsmith. ,,, 98 acs to be holden of His Lorship's Manor of Chaptico" (Apparently the Manor of Chaptico included land both in Chaptico Hundred and in St Clements Hundred)
Hopworth is found on page 47 of the TLC Rent Roll as follows:
St. Clement's Hundred:
"Hopworth" 100 acs surv. 25 Nov 1679 for John Goldsmith.Possessor Thomas Notley Goldsmith.
On the other hand,
"Higgs' Purchase" 49 acs surv. for John Higgs 15 Dec 1742, is described as being on the eastmost side of the Northwest branch of Chaptico Bay (TLC Rent Roll p. 95) It was also said to be in Chaptico Hundred and not in St Clement's Hundred, so I don't think that it was near Wednesday's Project.
Robert
