ANNE HILL THOMAS

Avis "Anne" Hill Thomas, 73, of Creswell, Ore., died July 6, 2006.

Born June 2, 1933, in Newton, to Jess and Carrie (Higdon) Hill, she grew up on a wheat farm near Coldwater and moved to Oregon with her family in 1947, at the age of 14. After living a year in Ashland, Ore., the family moved to a farm near London, Ore.

She graduated from Cottage Grove High School in 1951 and the University of Oregon in 1956. She received a masters degree there in 1966.

She was a journalist most of her life. She wrote sports and general news for the Palo Alto (Calif.) Times from 1956-1958. In 1969 she went to work for the Cottage Grove Sentinel and was editor from 1974-1980. She was arts and entertainment editor for the Ashland Daily Tidings from 1986-1990. She worked for the Springfield News from 1990 to 2003 when she retired after being editor for five years.

She also taught at Mount Shasta Elementary School in 1958-1959 and at Sheldon and Churchill High Schools in Eugene in the mid-1960's.

She received many rewards during her journalist career, including being named Oregon Press Women's Communicator of Achievement in 1998.

On August 4, 1957, she married Norman C. Thomas. They later divorced.

Her survivors include: one daughter, Linda Thomas of Creswell; one uncle, Bert Hill of Talent, Ore.; one aunt, Florence Smith in Calif.; and two cousins, Phyllis Higdon and Sue Leabo of Eugene.

Service was Friday, July 13, 2006, at Cottage Grove Presbyterian Church. Memorial contributions may be made to Cottage Grove Humane Society.
