John Hixson (a/k/a Hixon or Hickson), was born circa 1685 to William and Mary (Pattison/Patterson) Hixson, who were Quakers who migrated from England to West Jersey and first settled near Crosswicks Creek, in Burlington County. They later moved a little North, into what would become Hunterdon County (and even later, Mercer County).

I am developing a THEORY on the wife of this John Hixson. I believe there is circumstantial evidence to support a claim that John married Anne Giles, daughter of Matthew and Katherine (maiden name unknown) Giles, who lived near Stony Brook (modern-day Princeton), New Jersey.

Matthew (or Mathew) Giles was born ca. 1667 and administered the estate of his late father, James Giles, in the area of Piscataway (which then included the land around Bound Brook), Middlesex County, New Jersey ca. 1689. This is on the Raritans River. Matthew married twice, once to Katharine (maiden name unknown), ca. 1690, and once to Phoebe Hendricks, daughter of Jabez Hendricks, in 1695. By his wife Katharine, Matthew was the father of Anne Giles, born January 30, 1690/91.

William Hixson was one of three witnesses to the 1711 will of Matthew Giles, and after Matthew's death, widower William Hixson married the widow Phoebe (Hendricks) Giles. In his will of 1722, William Hixson specifically mentioned his wife's children, Matthew and Mary Giles (this Matthew would have been "junior").

John Hixson attended the Quaker marriage of Anne Clarke (daugher of Benjamin and Anne (Giles) Clarke) to John Cooper in 1711/12 (records of Burlington Monthly Meeting). John Hixson also attened the Quaker marriage of Elizabeth Clarke (another daughter of Benjamin and Anne (Giles) Clarke) to James Lord in 1714/15 (records of Burlington MM).

I believe that John Hixson and his wife named their first son Matthew Hixson (and this son eventually migrated to Loudoun County, Virginia, ca. 1765).

When I combine the various Hixson-Giles connections, it seems to me that there is some circumstantial evidence to support the claim that Anne Giles (b. 1690/91 to Matthew and Katherine) married John Hixson.

One potential problem is the 1711 will of Matthew Giles. He did not mention his daughter Anne. This fact could be explained in one of two ways. First, it is possible that Anne had died in childhood (before 1711) and therefore was not mentioned. Second, it is also possible that Anne had married and had received some dowry or type of wedding gift, and that her father felt she had received her "fair share" of his property already and so did not leave her anything more. Either of these assumptions is reasonable, but the THEORY presented here would only be viable if the second of these possible explanations were true.

If anyone has any information about this Anne Giles, or about the wife of John Hixson, please contact me directly at duaneaboggs@hotmail.com. BTW, I reject the theory presented by others that this John Hixson married an Elizabeth Stillwell. That theory lacks any evidence.
