Sherrie,
Catherine Hicks would have been one of my cousins. She was the daughter of William Hicks (the brother of my fifth great-grandfather, Charles Hicks) and William's wife: Lydia Halfbreed. She was the sister of George Augustus Hicks, a conductor of one of the groups who came across the Trail of Tears. These relationships are documented in both the Moravian Mission Diaries of Spring Place and Oothcaloga, as well as court records.
Catherine's first marriage was to Andrew Miller (a white man), and with him she had eight children. Andrew was murdered by the Maney brothers in 1818 in Blount Co TN while on a business trip. In 1819 the Spring Place Moravian Mission recorded her marriage to Thomas Gann. Four children were born to them: George, Isaac, Elias, and Ruth.
To those who list Nancy Broom as the mother of Charles Hicks --- no, that was a simple error made by Emmett Starr in his book. Nancy Broom was the wife (and later the widow) of Charles Hicks (per her baptismal records in the Spring Place Moravian Diary).
Hope this helps to get you on the right track--
